February 24th-25th Great Lakes Snowstorm

Geos

Recommended Posts

I'm sure 50+mph wind gusts for a 6-12 hour period is going to wreck havoc.  Is it rippin' pretty good out by you?

@ Niko, how far N/NW of DTW are you located again???

I'm about an hour north/north west from DTW.

This storm has a ton of moisture with it. Whoever hits the jackpot with this system will score high in terms of accumulations.

Currently snowing, but mixing occurring from time to time. I think the heaviest of the storm moves in later this afternoon and especially all of tonight and  into tomorrow morning where heavy wind driven snow will be falling.

Snow/rain is almost up to North Chicago now. Random flurries continuing. I think the lower deck of clouds is being produced by the lake- It has that look.

N IN/SW MI are in the thick of things right now.  I wouldn't be surprised to see 12-18" totals coming in from this storm!  A wild Blizzard is unfolding near Campaign Urbana/Gary .

Jaster, this has your storm written all over it buddy!  Enjoy the show...I better see some good pics and vids if possible.  Some of the video's I'm seeing on social media are amazing.  This storm is definitely hitting those who haven't seen much snow this season downstate IL/IN and in portions of MI.

Thanks Tom - I hoped so - lol  until that 12z Euro qpf map you just posted    Where did half my liquid go Euro??  Nikos looks prime to cash in compared to typical SEMI climo. If he does better I'm happy for him - I had Nov 21st and he got side-lined on that one..

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0144
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1049 AM CST WED FEB 24 2016

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF LOWER MI

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 241649Z - 242245Z

SUMMARY...HEAVY SNOW IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP NEWD/NWD...AFFECTING
PORTIONS OF LOWER MI THROUGH THE AFTERNOON HOURS. SNOWFALL RATES OF
1.0-1.5 INCHES PER HOUR WILL BE LIKELY.

DISCUSSION...WATER-VAPOR IMAGERY INDICATES A DEFORMATION-ZONE/
COMMA-HEAD STRUCTURE AFFECTING PARTS OF LOWER MI...ASSOCIATED WITH A
DEEP EXTRATROPICAL CYCLONE. AS THIS CYCLONE CROSSES PORTIONS OF THE
LOWER GREAT LAKES AND OHIO VALLEY REGION...PRECIP WILL CONTINUE TO
SPREAD NEWD ACROSS LOWER MI THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. THERE WILL BE A
TENDENCY FOR THE NRN EXTENT OF THIS ACTIVITY TO SHIFT NWD WITH
TIME...AS SFC LOW PRESSURE TO THE S OF THE REGION FURTHER
INTENSIFIES ALONG ITS NEWD TRACK. DEEP SUB-FREEZING PROFILES SAMPLED
BY THE 12Z DTX/APX RAOBS...AND MODESTLY DEEP DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONES
BETWEEN H7 AND H5...IMPLY SNOW BEING THE PREDOMINANT PRECIP TYPE.
FRONTOGENETIC CIRCULATIONS AND RELATED ASCENT SHOULD BE SUFFICIENTLY
STRONG/DEEP TO SUPPORT SNOWFALL RATES OF 1.0-1.5 INCHES PER HOUR
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON -- CONTINUING INTO THE EVENING ACROSS PARTS OF
NERN LOWER MI. LOCALLY STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE BLOWING/DRIFTING
SNOW AND MUCH-REDUCED VISIBILITIES.

There has been a noticeable increase in the snow fall here at my house. The flack size has gotten bigger and the wind is still around 20 MPH but not very gusty. The ground and roofs are covered but so far the road is just wet. (just starting to stick on the road) There is less than one inch on the ground here at 2 PM. The snow is sticking to the sides of the trees at this time and the temp is holding at 32° on Radar the heaver snow looks to be just south of me yet heading north.  One more note even with the wind there is not much blowing of the snow on the ground but the snow that is falling is going sideways.

Not @ home, but peeking in at the ASOS been steady SN since 8:30 and AOB 32*F with 24*F wind chills. Has to be accumulating efficiently and reports are upwards of 5-6" down even to my NE in SEMI so guessing mby's similar. Should be interesting commute home in about 90 mins. Winds not been bad (yet) that's coming after dark. My fave feature of a snowstorm and not common for this area.

WestJim is in the heart of the heaviest band according to radar...western edge of the snow band in IL dwindling and weakening...

Need some more lift. Ground has been slow to whiten up since the sleet base layer is gone now.
