Top 5 cold February for some PNW locations

Jesse

Recommended Posts

With the recent cooling trend in the models, it's looking like PDX (and possibly other PNW stations) have a shot at a top 5 cold February.

PDX's top 5:

1956: 35.8

1989: 36.0

1950: 38.8

1949: 39.1

1969: 39.7

February 2014 so far: 38.2

Plugging in the numbers from Mark's 7-day (which is on the warm side of things right now), brings PDX to 39.7 by the 26th.

If things trend cooler, which certainly seems possible, 2014 could find itself in the #5 spot.

Any information about other PNW stations who may also see a top cold month, or cold stats from the arctic blast at the beginning of the month is encouraged on this thread!

Hoquiam may be in the running, how would I find their info for monthly temps?  I would like to figure it out.

I know it is not a major station, but its still a station.

They might have that on the NWS site. They have a really nice page for PDX:

I am such a junkie for these kinds of stats.

Looking at the weather underground stats for KHQM, it shows they are at 40 for average this month.  Pretty impressive for them I would think.

I would think so. KVUO (BLI) snowman is the guru with that kind of thing. He or Jim. Hopefully they will have some data to add to this thread.

Here are the top 5 for SLE

1) 1989 - 34.7

2) 1936 - 35.6

3) 1929 - 36.0

4T) 1956 - 37.0

4T) 1923 - 37.0

SLE's current average for February is 40.3 so they have no chance at a top 5. The are only running a -2.2 departure right now.

Just using the Weather Underground for Hoquiam, that only has records back to 1954 and missing years 94-96 for some reason I came up with this.

1. 1956 and 1989 at 37 degrees

2. 1976                 at 39 degrees

3. 1955 and 2011 at 40 degrees

4. multiple years(more than 2) at 41 degrees.

So since 1954 this year is on pace to tie 1955 and 2011 for the coldest Februaries, not too shabby.  I think there is a chance it dips to 39 though.

That is honestly the first time I have ever taken the time to look up historical cold anomalies that far back.  Phew.

It does not look like the NOAA has info like they do for PDX or SLM for Hoquiam unfortunately, so legwork is needed.

Their 5 coldest Februaries, since 1953, are

1: 1989: 37.04

2: 1956: 37.24

3. 1976: 39.53

4. 1955: 39.62

5. 2011: 40.12

Aberdeen has a much longer period of record, so they're likely not in the running.

The Hoquiam station definitely has a shot.

I wish I knew where the Aberdeen COOP station is located, or how to see up to date stats from it.

Certainly not going to happen for SEA.  While their numbers for the cold snap were pretty good, ever since then they have gone back to their horrible warm biased readings.  They desperately need to do something about that station.

No, they're at 39.8 today.

Will easily be in the top 6 or 7 for PDX.

40.0 even today and that was with a +1 dep on the 26th and -4 on the 27th (-1.5 combined departure). The rather warm temps today will probably bump it up another 0.2 to 0.3 at least. I am guessing we come in at 40.3. Perhaps that seems impressive when you consider a relatively small period of record at PDX, only 74 Februaries since 1940, thus a top 10 cold Feb should occur every 7-8 years, top 5 every 15 years or so.

SEA will probably end up at 41.7 which would be -1.7 departure.

13 of the last 18 days have been above normal though.

Silly to look at it like it was such a cold month... rather there was one REALLY cold week.

Officially 40.3 (-3.5 dep) at PDX.

Top 10

1956: 35.8

1989: 36.0

1950: 38.8

1949: 39.1

1969: 39.7

1993: 40.0

1964: 40.1

2014: 40.3

2011: 40.3

Tied for 2011 for 8th place

1964 is an annoying one, that winter sucked and the patterns that month were trash. Just shows how much more rural PDX was back then.

When was the last time that SLE and EUG ended with below average night minimums?  It seems the last decade it's been very hard to get cold clear air masses any more and usually warm fronts come and erode them pretty quickly when one does attempt to set up shop.

Dude, are you kidding? EUG fell to -10f this winter, and both SLE and EUG have had a ton of sub-freezing lows.

None of your posts make any sense.

Yeah, Eugene's average December low temp was 26.4. Obviously one of their coldest December average lows on record. They also had a low of 19 in November, and 20 I believe in February...That post made no sense!
