WELLINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck central New Zealand just after midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey said, causing widespread damage and generating a tsunami.

New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management warned of the risk of destructive waves along the country's entire east coast and urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate and seek higher ground.

Waves of up to two metres (6 feet) could be possible for up to two hours, it said.

There are a couple of stories/videos from people who recorded blue/green/white flashes that are supposed to be a natural phenomenon associated with very powerful earthquakes.  The skeptic in me attributes those flashes to exploding transformers and arcing power lines, but one article I read said that there is record of this phenomenon going back several hundred years.

I keep waiting for the PNW to pop.  I think there have been a couple of instances where the Pacific popped in 3 of the 4 corners with a major quake (Chile, New Zealand, and Japan) but nothing hear yet....Probably a gross oversimplification of the whole process on my part.....
