January 2017 Observations and Discussion

Very strong winds today, along with some embedded snowshowers or flurries flying around. Nothing more than a dusting here and there. Believe it or not, blowing snow at times with that dusting on the ground. :D

Nuttin but on-n-off flurries here at the lakeshore in St. Joseph. Steady SHSN inland, but roads moving smoothly on Google Maps tells me the light fluffy stuff is not having much impact inland yet. Won't take much though as soon as rush hour cranks. GRR's AFD mentioned only 2" every 12 hrs (strung out event) and this kind of set-up does better at night and/or when there's a "trigger" moving through like a trough axis. It'll pound for a few hours when that happens, but rarely see these giving heavy rates of snow for hours on end. Rates vary widely with these. Some will reach over to SEMI too, not sure as far north as Macomb though?

I am just north of lincoln a mile. Have just a bit less than an inch. Very light snow and very small flakes but it's something. I remove snow so hoping we can get to 2" before it's done. Been snowing here since around 4:00. Heavier ban set up around 5:00 and lasted around an hour where we picked up most the accumulation.

I've had .1 or maybe .2" of snow. It's so cold that of course all of the snow falling was sticking, right away, but there's so little it's only showing up on the roads and sidewalks. Can't even see it accumulating on the grass. Roads are pretty slick despite the very little accumulation and it actually looked worse than what it is outside when I was driving home. Snow is so light and fluffy that it blows around very easily, making visibility reduced at times

With the southern snow storm going on my snow fall amounts look pale. But I now have a temperature of 12° with very fine snow falling. I now have 1.5” on snow on the ground so all in all not that much! The falling snow at this time is to the south my part of GR.

#TBT 3 Years ago today, Chicago and areas nearby endured a record cold Arctic Outbreak...Brrr, I remember that day like it was yesterday...#PolarVortex

C1aNNAtWIAA-IRT.jpg

That was awesome, especially hitting on the heals of the storm like it did - absolutely one of the most brutal snow removal times in my life, and I had a lot of winter in the Northland. Sigh..on the synoptic storm prospects for our region. Not to mention, you my friend, are on the wrong side of the pond. This from a MI peep tells the tale in a humorous if harsh way..

Let's face it, sharing a region with the lakes is rough. You are living close to one of the most amazing natural snowmaking machines on earth, but not close enough.

It's like living in the shadow of a mountain. At least you aren't in Chicago, they have to stare at the snow machine, but the snow guns are pointing at the neighbors yard.

Life in the snow belts can be mesmerizing, just like it is today in upstate NY near the eastern shores of Lake Ontario!

You've not missed much (so far anyways) as mby's gotten only 1.4" of what I refer to as "mega-fluff stuff". There was snow all the way to the lakeshore this morning, but nobody had more than 3-ish from what I could see. We lack true elevation, unlike NMI where I see reports of up to 14" and those were last night's totals - not done up there by any means. Future-cast does look promising, even for Marshall, so still optimistic I could reach the coveted 4" mark at home. 48hr ARW seems to agree:

Yeah, those kind of rates are fun stuff to experience. Nothing close to that going on in SWMI so far. As posted above, light amounts so far, but hopeful we can get a timely UL "impulse" sometime in the next 24-30 hrs to reach respectable totals. One thing I've learned about LES, especially down-state here in SWMI, is that they don't always verify. At least the ground is white with maybe 1.5" here in St. Joseph and fine snow continues, so that it looks like Jan and certainly the cold winds along the shoreline are giving "real feel" temps below ZERO.

Skies are clearing now and the bottom will fall tonight as temps in my area will be flirting with zero. Patches of dusting of snow here and there and also patches of snow piles from December snowfalls, if you can believe that.

Sure is beautiful to finally see some moderate snow.

P.s. Suck it Euro. Lol. :)

How much do you have???

Meantime, very impressive cold around these parts.  Sitting at the big goose egg 0F without a snow cover and many subzero readings just west and north of here.  Even downtown Chicago got down to 1F near the lake.  This is the type of cold that will burst pipes under ground if you don't have that blanket of snow.

It’s now up to +9° here at my house after I bottomed out at +1° for the coldest so far this winter.  I now have 2.5” of snow on the ground here at my house (last report at the airport was 1”) The low looks to be +2° at the airport. of note it has not been below zero officially in GR since February 28th 2015 the last time it reached zero was on March 5th 2015 and the last time it was double digits below zero was February 27th 2015 when it was -11°  While last winter and so far this winter it has not be below zero in the winter of 2014/15 it got as cold as -13° twice and Grand Rapids went below zero 10 times that winter.

I noted only the extreme lows that month in Marshall (Feb 2015). Pretty certain the -23º was a modern record, if not all-time for this region of Mich.

I was watching Skilling yesterday and during his show he mentioned Houghton, MI had near record snowfall of over 100" of snow in December! Gaylord, MI had something in the order of 65". Impressive LES totals. Would love to experience something like that with blinding snowfall rates and wind.

Nobody's job to officially submit reports out of the Keweenaw north of Houghton up around Calumet, but John Dee's really confident that some small region up there had upwards of 130" for December! Like getting 4+ non-stop every day for a month..think about that.
