wx_statman
Here's something I discovered recently - the WRCC has summarized records for a bunch of inactive stations that don't show up when you click on the state. You have to know how to find them. For example, when you click on Oregon or Washington you get a list of both active and inactive stations, which you can browse for daily records. But there's a whole bunch more inactive stations, as well as more recent stations with short POR's (such as the PDX NWS office, with records only back to 1996). To access these stations and their summarized daily records, open the US COOP station map @ the WRCC: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/coopmap/# Zoom in to the area you want, and click on "show stations." Then click on the station to access the daily records. Navigation there is identical to the main menu of stations at the WRCC, the daily records are right where you would expect them. Its a pretty neat tool. All of this data has always been available at the Utah Climate Center and the NCDC, but they don't have this data sorted into daily record values. Lots of interesting stats available through this tool. Here are a few examples I've played around with: Portland NWS Office (1996-2016):http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or6750 Stafford, OR (1896-1919):http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or8034A 12/0 day in January 1909 Meadowbrook Ranch, just outside of Cascade Locks:http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or5400This station only existed from 1912-1914, but caught a 60"+ snow bonanza in January 1913 Wallace Orchards (1909-1934), just outside of Salem:http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or898815" of snow on 1/15/1930 Blitzen, a cold spot in E. Oregon (1914-1933):http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or0808-50 in Jan. 1930 and -47 in Dec. 1919 Snohomish, WA (1894-1921):http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?wa775642" of snow on February 1-2, 1916 (with 36" depth), also very impressive 18/1 in mid-January 1907 To anyone who already knew about this tool, you can ignore this message. I'm excited because I just discovered it, and thought I would share it with others who might not know about it.
BLI snowman
Yeah, I've noticed that for several years but have never mentioned it. The daily summary stats are a great resource so the more the merrier.
wx_statman
Yeah, I've noticed that for several years but have never mentioned it. The daily summary stats are a great resource so the more the merrier. I don't blame you for not sharing it. I usually don't bother talking about my sources here either. I guess I'm in a giving mood.
