January Weather In the PNW

Yeah, I’m well aware that our winters suck. They still kick the crap out of yours, though. ;)

What is SEA’s coldest low this winter? Like 25*F? That’s literally 10*F warmer than our average temperature over the last two weeks. So forgive me for rolling my eyes.

It's like us posting in a southern Cal thread and bragging about being colder than them. Childish.

Eventually we'll get one of these extended deformation bands with a nice cold airmass ahead of it. Those can be prolific snow producers. In the meantime we can watch the webcams around Chilliwack-Hope:

I agree it likely stops somewhere near there but Chilliwack is under a Winter storm watch for snow and freezing rain tomorrow.

Your 850 temp map is an anomaly map. I would be willing to bet that the airmass in the BC interior is colder than the one in Texas.

Well, at least I have cold air above me here in Austin....need some rain to bring it down to me!

We have a wind advisory here today. Should be a active day. Seeing a line of thunderstorms developing to the southeast of me....unfortunately they won’t be moving in my direction.

Currently 66 and temp should plumit soon as front goes through

I’d say ensembles have improved a little in the mid-long range.

Solid improvement really.

Sometimes I make the incorrect assumption that if no one here is talking about a particular run or ensemble chart it must be horrible.

I think interest in the weather right now is waning due to how boring this season has been. I think a few fantasy range GFS blasts would bring people back...

Just saw on the Book of Faces that it is snowing up towards Sumas, but still rain just in Blaine, Ferndale and Lynden.  A quick look at the traffic cams doesn't show anything sticking to the ground up there yet.  It's 35 IMBY, I haven't been outside or near a window since 6:30 this morning so I don't know if we are getting any mixed precip....I guess I should get up and take a walk

We had a small accumulation of wet snow here around mid morning. Turned back to mostly rain now.

What I would give for the temperature to be 10 degrees colder...

Actually 9 degrees only. It's 41 at home.

Meanwhile it's dumping in Leavenworth.

"Interesting signature from the latest ECMWF Week 4 Clusters; Top 3 clusters show a similar pattern, though vary on the latitude of the ridge forecast to build over the eastern U.S. (from +NAO to -NAO)."

I'll take Cluster 4 please. 10% chance? Oki doki. Cluster 6 would be strong backdoor blast.

Everything else seems to kind of make sense to me, but 4, 6, and 8 seem to be at odds about what to do with that block.  Throw in 7, too.  Keeps trying trying to answer it a bunch of different ways.

Took a quick walk and negative splat test in the Barkley area.  Folks on the BoF are talking about it starting to mix on I-5 between Ferndale and Blaine, snow in Maple Falls (doesn't take much to get it snowing up there).  Temp still falling slowly.

Looks like Skykomish had a bit of snow this morning. An example of how the cold air is stubborn to move out of that area that is only 1000 feet.

Looks like some slushy accumulation around the border at Sumas.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

The way the models drive longwave upper level troughing deep into the Southwestern US, right out of the GOA, is something we haven’t seen in awhile. Even if it’s mostly mediocre mid-latitude Pacific stuff, it’s definitely a change from the 2013-2017 regime.

I think the combination of waning solar, and a more prototypical Niña/MJO system, is beginning to show it’s hand, even if this pattern in intraseasonal in nature. Will be interesting to watch unfold during A/M/J, when the QBO will almost certainly have flipped @ 50mb.

With the snow at Snoqualmie Pass today, it has a current seasonal snowfall total of 176". Last year on this date, we had 174" and ended up pretty close to normal. pic.twitter.com/LuqQjcgcdQ— Scott Sistek (@ScottSKOMO) January 11, 2018

Wow I would have thought that we would have been lagging behind right now from last year.
