January Weather In the PNW

stuffradio

Recommended Posts

Even solid +PNA months like November 2016 can be very stormy/active. That Arctic blast in November 2014 also occurred during a +PNA.

This idea that there has to be a ridge over the PNW during a +PNA is a myth. Sure, western ridging is certainly more frequent during +PNA, but it certainly isn’t a certainty or a prerequisite in said regimes.

I didn't see anyone say that.

The 00z GFS is gorgeous with the 3-wave pattern. It’s almost like old times.

And yes, Flatiron, that’s a “tanked” NAO.

Glad to see some of the last few runs show the goodies in the long range. I'm starting to get excited again. I'm hoping we can finally score a nice Arctic blast this winter.

Just a great run. Chilly from next Thursday through the end of the run. Some real potential.

Well the latest GFS has a decent amount of chilly, yet boring southerly flow at least.  Better than a torch.  Clown range looks funny too, but I don't expect it to actually snow here.  Though it's so weird to see Lows centered in a good spot with no cold air to draw from since it's all on the other side of the D**n planet!

This run is tons of snow up here...So just head up to SIlver Falls or Detroit Lake if you don't get much. Clown range would give you snow though...

I also don't expect the ensembles to agree with the operational at all.  I've a feeling it will be an outlier.

Enjoy the next hour before the 00Z ECMWF starts running. ;)

Maybe, but it would be downright hilarious if the NAO is what ends up saving Flatiron’s January forecast (ie: this GFS run), after all the hate he’s directed its way.

There is a lot of very cold air in northern BC, it just doesn't get that far South.

If blocking sets up favourably for any length of time, it doesn’t take long to tap into cold air in northern Canada. Average lows in the Yukon this time of year are 25 below.

Maybe, I don’t know. I’m burnt out right now.

This is definitely the first time in my life that I’ve gotten into a debate over whether or not jet extensions are associated with +PNA. That’s like debating whether 2 + 2 = 4..it’s common knowledge, but believe it or not, it’s actually more difficult to “prove” mathematically than you might think.

If you are tired of the mild weather conditions, consider that the government is manipulating the weather for purposes that are not in your best interest-

Like I said, it would be nice if the coldest air would be on our side of the planet so the Columbia Basin were just a notch colder, then those lows would build the cold air dam enough that the southern end of it can get as far south as Corvallis.  Sadly, it's just not going to be cold enough over there.

It's payback for our good winter last year.
