2018 California/Southwest Weather Thread

Recommended Posts

Despite the scattered clouds/ wind the longer daylight allowed the temp to finally reach 70F late this afternoon. May showers would be extra nice this week.

The cold cut off low is definitely contributing to a very chilly day so far. Reports of very light/ trace to 0.05 rain scattered about SoCal.

Currently: cloudy/ 63F

Last May started out warm/hot and then temperatures took a nose dive. Looks like the opposite this year.

Start of May 2017 - Fullerton

Nothing too dynamic, but May did start out warm last year

That's a 37 degree drop in 2 days!

If 37 degrees is not a big enough 2 day drop, how about 40 degrees?!

Finally, a place that's a little more dynamic...

Start of May 2017 - Del Mar Beach

05/01/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 67 / 54 / 0.00 /05/02/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 65 / 59 / 0.00 /05/03/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 67 / 58 / 0.00 /05/04/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 66 / 63 / 0.00 /05/05/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 63 / 61 / 0.00 /05/06/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 63 / 59 / 0.00 /05/07/17 SDDMB: DEL MAR BEACH 10 : 58 / 53 / 0.20 /

Good old California micro-climates.

As I remember last year, the May 7 storm brought the coldest day ever recorded in the month of May to a few areas away from the coast. Snow levels were about 4000 ft.

For this one, snow levels are 5500-6000 ft., but it looks like coastal areas could be colder than last year. Sea surface temperatures are just slightly below normal. Last year they were above normal.

Today would be considered a cold day in mid-winter. Too bad rainfall was pathetic but convective activity tomorrow could produce better results.

Rain is falling, but it's stratiform and not cumulonimbiform, which I would prefer over the stratiform.

Once again Lake Forest is one of the areas with the most rain, being near the Santa Ana mountains.

Snow appears to be falling in the San Bernardino Mountains and even Palm Springs is overcast this second day of January, I mean May.

Managed to record a measly 0.02 overnight but May showers are generally quite limited in SoCal. North Pacific storms lose most if not all of the dynamics to produce rainfall and the monsoon hasn't developed yet. Noteworthy are the very cool maximums; 20 degrees below average yesterday. Similar readings during winter would have produced maximums below 50F; quite rare. At least we are getting in on "weather" that normally escapes us this time of the year.

Storm: 0.03

Oh, the weather outside is frightful

But the fire is so delightful

And since we've no place to go

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Man it doesn't show signs of stoppin'

And I brought some corn for poppin'

The lights are turned way down low

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Probably not that unusual historically.

In Mr. Marine Layer's dream world where global warming is even faster and more severe it would probably never happen, though.
