Yes. It's a little more inland and closer to the Santa Ana Mountains than where I live, so it really gets that orographic effect.

It's almost 2:30PM and it's still cloudy and cool. No wind at all either which is very unusual for this area. Ugh, I hate May Gray and June Gloom.

Lima, Peru, whose latitude is well into the tropics (about 12 S) also gets June Gloom, but that's actually their winter. They have the cold Humboldt Current that keeps them foggy, drizzly and in the low to mid 60s.

 

Probably their tourists are just as confused as tourists who come to San Diego in May or June here.

It got sort of bright and warm for a while around 1 PM (at least according to the new May norm here) , but since then the clouds have thickened again.

 

Ground did not dry up until well past noon.

Not even Paso Robles burned off today. 63 F for their high. They are often low 100s in summer while Morro Bay remains socked in the fog in the upper 50s. In fact Morro Bay reached 59 F today, warmer than some days in July and August.

For the last 18 days the high at Del Mar Beach has been 62 F, 63 F, or 64 F. Most of them 63 F. Talk about boring.

0.09" fell here in Orange overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning with light rain and drizzle.

Julian fogged in again this morning and an eerie morning at Mt. Wilson Observatory, but no rain and actually some breaks in the clouds. Apparently the inversion has weakened.

The Marine Layer clouds is so much thinner and higher that the sun is shining time to time. I saw no sun at all yesterday.

The Marine Layer is finally gone ans has been replaced by cumulus clouds. It's now nice and partly cloudy now

At least the clouds looked pretty this morning with lots of holes and some puffy white cumulus. Not the solid gray of the last week or so. It's still partly cloudy here.

 

Sacramento is getting some rain.

 

I remember in 1999 we had a Pacific storm (not just a deep marine layer) as late as the middle of June down here, so while this kind of weather is not unusual for this time of year, so many consecutive days of it definitely is.

Finally some sunshine. I seriously do not understand how people can go for weeks without seeing the sun, but then again I'm a spoiled Southern Californian, and I probably have seasonal affective disorder to some extent.

Got pretty warm around 3 PM, but even with lots of sunshine, strong breeze is cooling it down quickly.

 

Possibly some record low high temperatures today for Central and Northern California.

The high was 70F, which overperformed.

Also 70 F at San Diego, due to reverse clearing today. Clouds are slow to redevelop this evening.

 

Best thing is when water temperature reaches 70 F or higher and the marine layer is no longer chilly, but that usually does not happen until mid July and it only happens south of Pt. Conception.

Looks like Downtown L.A. should average slightly above the very cool Mays of 2015 and 2016 for the high temperature, making 3 out of the last 4 Mays exceptionally cool.

For Fullerton the average high is just below 70 F from about early December to late March. It then goes from about 70 F to 74 F during April. Then in May it stays around 75 F for most of the month. Through June it goes from about 76 F to 81 F and reaches around 85 F by the end of July. It tops off late August around 86 F before steeply going down to about 81 F by late September. Not until the start of November does it reach the 75 F high of late May, but by that time it makes its steepest daily drop of the year. Strange climate.

From May to November you could add on a few degrees going 5+ miles further inland [Yorba Linda/ Lake Forest]. Here June averages 82° topping out at 89.4 in August and back down to 80.6 in October. Five months of summer yet some people are still unsatisfied.

Marine layer clouds are visible from Coachella Valley, but there is reverse clearing again.

Only 82 F in Palm Springs today. Here the reverse clearing has allowed it to feel hot when the sun is out and the wind is not blowing, but cool otherwise.

Basically a repeat of yesterday and the day before and the day before etc. I live close to San Gabriel mts so sunshine is quite limited during these May Gray events. Today was a tad warmer by 1° but clear overnight temp lowered minimum 2° [both below average].

 

It was a custom to spend Memorial weekend in Laguna Beach in the day when freeway traffic was less hideous. Almost always cloudy and cool except during reverse clearning; ocean temps cool but tolerable [60's].

Was hoping to get to Palm Springs this weekend, but everything was booked with people getting away from the May Gray. On days like today when the marine layer does not clear out of the mountain passes, it will cool down the desert quite a bit, with the wind blowing like crazy, especially near the 10.

 

Turned out to be a pretty nice afternoon here.

It's a rather strange marine layer pattern this morning. Still very deep, but less clouds over Los Angeles County.

Double inversion this morning. Should be an interesting clearing day today. Marine layer depth was an incredible 6200 ft yesterday, with some coastal areas (Laguna Beach: 70 F) warmer than inland (Ontario: 67 F) due to reverse clearing.
