I was surprised that minimums remained so warm since skies were mostly clear overnight. NWS_LA stated that high dew points were responsible but many areas were near and/or under 60°.

This has been a brutal heatwave w/ 4 days of nonstop AC in order to survive.

The high today in Santa Maria was 86F and the low was 58F. The high was actually 1 degree warmer than Saturday!

The only upside to the heat may be the mt showers, particularly in San Bernardino county. Baldwin Lake received 1.27 yesterday and 0.20 today.

Its 82F in San Luis Obispo! While its 59F in Santa Maria and its 64F in Paso Robles. Huge difference!

Its currently 81F with a dp of 48 in Santa Maria. Why is the air so dry for a monsoonal moisture event in Central Coast? Its usually somewhat muggy when it comes up here, (DP in the low 60's)

Damage has been done to subtropical trees. Michelia leaf-burn is extensive and veitchia palm frond burn looks bad but will recover.

The clouds became quite thick today, providing some relief from the heat. Phoenix got a big thunderstorm and the remains of that are headed our way.

Easterly wave delivering monsoon showers and dust storms across the desert; hopefully some of the moisture will propagate into coastal sections over the next several days. Yesterday the sky included dust particles you could see in the higher levels. Quite humid by California standards [upper 60's-low 70 dew points]. It did cool down enough for less overnight air conditioning.

Looks like dewpoint has reached a ridiculous 80 F in Coachella Valley.

Dewpoints/ clouds made for a very humid night; not comfortable sleeping conditions unless AC was on [ceiling fans help].

Don't see how dewpoints are dropping into the 50s during the middle of the day when the whole day feels muggy. It would suggest the mugginess is coming more from marine layer/above normal SSTs rather than monsoonal moisture, but strong monsoonal flow also seems to stop any upwelling on the coast, which helps to raise SSTs.

By California standard the weather hasn't been boring. Mt thunderstorms each afternoon, cumulonimbus/ altocumulus clouds, high dewpoints/ temps.

 

The low dropped below 70F for first time since July 5.
