It has been windy all day here. NW wind sweep across the San Fernando valley and downslope out of the San Gabriel mountains. It seems like it is windy here quite often during winter esp at night so it mixes the air and elevates minimums compared to calm areas.  Nonetheless, today is quite chilly.

63/ 51

It did get somewhat windier here in Orange this afternoon after I posted earlier about the wind.

I think your area is more favored in NW wind events, as it seems that much of Los Angeles County is. There must be something in my area that blocks the brunt of these winds from reaching my area. However, my area is very prone to strong Santa Ana winds, since I am close to the Santa Ana Canyon and Santa Ana Mountains area.

Solar declination has fallen below 20.00 S today and we will be one month into winter tomorrow. Today was mostly sunny, but chilly. That did not stop lots of people from wearing shorts and short sleeves anyway. Wind never got too strong, although it was breezy during the afternoon.

Low of 39 F this morning at Fullerton Airport. NWS Los Angeles forecast discussion mentions a slight possibility of freezing rain or drizzle for the Paso Robles area Monday morning. That place has one of the largest differences between low and high temperatures out of any city.

Coldest morning of winter for my location but not especially cold elsewhere. NWS dropped frost/ freeze advisories though 30's were scattered about.

I hope people in Utqiaġvik (Barrow), Alaska with heart problems are taking their Entresto because (singing voice) "the sun will come up tomorrow" for the first time since November 18. The full disc of the sun will not make it fully above the horizon and most likely be obstructed by clouds and landscape features, but people should be celebrating anyway. If you thought Barrow was bad, there's always Longyearbyen, where the sun will not rise until February 15.

Cold offshore flow and lack of an inversion is keeping the air nice and clear today as high clouds increase ahead of the next trough to pass to the north of us.

Is it frustrating to be at the bottom of a trough. All the energy of the past system shifted east into Mt West. The only semblance of winter are cold temps but nothing even close to widespread freezing. It is noteworthy that south Arizona has a freeze warning. Vegetable/ citrus damage has been in Texas/ Florida this winter but read that grapefruits survived. Coconuts took a hit in south Texas/ central Florida. :o

It got down to 38.8 on the north side of my house here in Orange this morning, which is the coldest low of the season so far.

That is quite cold! That temperature observation must be at the bottom of the canyon where cold air pools.

Chilly morning today. Have not been used to these here. I should have got out my winter jacket. Nevertheless, there was someone jogging in shorts.

The sun will be up from 1:26 PM to 1:52 PM in Barrow today for their first sunrise of 2018. Solar noon, with no clouds or obstructions to the horizon should look something like this.

Attached File  BarrowJan22.png   541bytes   0 downloads

Down here, sunset today (5:12 PM) is half an hour later than December 4 and 26 minutes later than Winter Solstice. Sunrise (6:52 AM) is still more than a minute later than Winter Solstice, but lighter mornings than December 21 begin this week.

No way to deny that we are in deep doo-doo.  Every week without rain means we are losing ground in an already short rain season.

Barrow's first day of sunrise/sunset since November 18 has passed with about 25 minutes of daylight and the top of the sun reaching an incredible 0.03 degrees above the horizon at solar noon. Unfortunately it was -27 F and overcast there for the event and the Barrow Sea Ice Webcam site is down. Tomorrow they get 1 hour and 20 minutes of daylight. Forecast shows mostly sunny by the weekend.

Here it's an uneventful day with no signs of any storms passing to the north as there's no marine layer or any high clouds.

I don't know, but I am not aware of any La Nina since 1900 that has led to the driest winter on record for downtown Los Angeles, despite La Nina being associated with "dry".

If we don't get any meaningful rain before the end of the season, we will definitely beat out 2006-07 for the driest year. I am really hoping for some late season storms later this season. It is very abnormal to this dry the entire season, and getting only one storm for the season is also very abnormal.

Frost and marine layer usually do not mix. It was sunny at sunrise, then it got really gloomy for a few hours and now it is mostly sunny again and chilly. The gloom was mostly over Orange County while San Diego County had much less clouds.

Sunrise has finally returned to the same time it was on the Winter Solstice, but evenings have gained nearly 29 minutes since then. Of course that means the sun is rising further to the East.

Looks like they were able to recover the John Wayne Airport rainfall totals for the one big storm and it was 1.10". San Diego got 0.02" from today's marine layer explosion event. Other places only picked up a trace of rain, including John Wayne, Downtown L.A., and LAX.

Plummeting temperatures this afternoon for one of the coldest temperatures for this time of day so far this winter. Local sea surface temperatures must have dropped even if they are still above normal offshore.

The Santa Ana Winds are coming. Hope not to see a repeat of last December. It would also be nice if they could get rid of the remaining leaves on my trees, as they would normally be gone by this time of year with those spiky balls sprouting.

I can relate to the New Yorker cover due to being ill with a cold and then the flu [even though I got the shot] and now a sinus infection. This has been a warm/ dry winter but many here are "under the weather" nonetheless this year.

I got sick on the day after Christmas with the flu and remained sick for 3 weeks, despite getting the flu shot. I have been getting the flu shot for about 20 years and I believe this is the only time that I got the flu when I already had the shot. This must be a new strain of flu going around this season because it has affected so many people nationwide.

Not too much wind here, especially compared to last December, but it's hot out there.
