This story has 9 lives, but that doesn't make the threat unrealistic.
No one knows when a seriously big Quake will hit in a heavily populated area.
With volcanos quite active on the Ring of Fire and quakes remaining very active, as in the Mexico 7.2 on the Mexican west coast, who's to say when the west US coast will get hammered.
