March Weather in the Pacific Northwest

stuffradio

Recommended Posts

Over the last fews runs... the GEM has gone in steps from being the coldest model for late in the week and next weekend with a very deep trough digging down into the PNW... to now being the warmest model and basically holding the ridge over us.

Not a good position to be hoping the GEM is actually right for once.

The GFS continues to like the idea of a significant cold snap in early April.  Crazy!

Not buying it yet... the potential is there.

I think its being a little too aggressive with the trough based on the ECMWF and EPS.   But these retrogression situations are never modeled well and often end up even colder than the models originally show.

Some moisture sliding up the valley, mostly to the west of me, just some intermittent flurries at the moment. 33 after a low of 30.

The GFS is interesting. Thickness rises to about 530 here this afternoon (maybe some light rain) and then drops as the trough axis swings through. Very weak deformation basically right over me, would be 1-2" tonight at face value.

Not to sound like Tim, but the GFS shows warm front drizzle here Monday-Wednesday. That will be a sad, slushy, slow melt.

Starting to slowdown here. My total is 2.5” so you are the champ. Considering we are both at a lower elevation than Sea-Tac it’s been a pretty productive winter.

Slowing here as well, everything is covered even the road. No too shabby for late March!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Its coming.

Sun is trying to come out now!

But Friday/Saturday look nice here at least. With a cooling airmass, could see another freeze late week.

No action here. Didn't get below 36 last night. What other spots in the PNW have had an inch or less this winter? Even the coast seems to have had more than an inch in some spots with all the events combined. Just got really unlucky it seems since other years have been great here (like last winter).

If I wasn’t so lazy I would drive up to the new house and see how much if any snow that area got. Looking at the radar and reports from my work (which is close to the new house) it sounds like they got a little as well. Though the house is at 500ft and my work is about 250.

Getting brighter out now. I think it’s finally ending. I have 3” thanks to that last heavy shot. 21.5” so far. Still counting after looking at the GFS.

Wow that’s a solid shot of snow! We are moving the last week of April so I might be adding to my total here before we leave.

EPS shows the same basic pattern for the entire long range.

Even 15 days out... its still the same pattern. This is very similar to what happened in early February before the big SSW event. Ironic that this persistent pattern is returning even after the major shake up following the SSW event.

eps_t850a_noram_61.png

It’s definitely not the same pattern, but it looks that way over North America due to seasonal wavelength changes and intraseasonal forcings.

Eurasia/Europe is another story. They’re obviously in a very different pattern now, and they’re feeling it. There’s still a -NAM/low height moat surrounding it, and it’s evident around the spectrum of NH teleconnections.

Good information.

I knew it looked like it over NH.   Which I guess is all that matters here.

Latest CFS monthly outlook shows a warm summer for the PNW (every month from May through September).

Good for those who want a cool summer since it will probably be the opposite of whatever the CFS is showing.

Yeah, the CFS has gotten pretty much every month backwards this year. It was predicting a -PNA last summer as well, and we know how that turned out.

Sun is out here and the temp has bumped up to the mid/upper 30s...Looking at radar though, the sun probably won't last for long.

GFS says no reason to wait until next winter for arctic air. ;)

At this point I would say the only thing that could mess up next winter would be a Nino.  Sometimes we get stuck in these regimes and it doesn't change until a Nino comes along.  That's not to say we won't get into a warm / hot pattern at times during the summer though.  At this point I would say there will ample blocking episodes and cold next winter.  I'm not saying a word whether that means the Puget Sound region will finally score a big Arctic outbreak snow though.

Would be pretty cool if tonight could have worked out to being clear with a dry airmass...Could have worked out to some impressive lows in snow covered areas.

Do we know it won't be clear yet?

Awesome picture.

Imagine that happening before the fall equinox. Gotta love thermal inertia.

Lucky SOBs...we only received a cold rain through this impressive late season cold snap.

This was a remarkably widespread snowfall for this late in the season.  You probably just didn't get ample precip intensity up there.

If that were to happen before the fall equinox we would be talking something of epic / historic proportions.

Speaking of historic...the GFS is hinting at it for early April.  The players are there, but they would have to come together just right.
