September 2018 Observations and Discussion

Today is the first day this season where it has the fall/winter feel. I don't know how to describe it, but there is a certain smell here when we start going into the cold season and I can smell it today. Low tonight is 41 and if it weren't for all this rain we might have hit the 30's tonight.

Yep, I know exactly what you’re talking about. Today is the first day of the cold season in my mind.

I was outside talking with the neighbors about an hour ago. My neighbor had to go inside as she said ‘it’s frigid out here”. Current temp of 52 but winds of 26 mph creating a Wind Chill of 44. Yesssssss!

Even down here, I woke up late last night and stuck my head outside for a bit and I had the same thought. Smelled like fall. It's like all these hardwoods let off a smell when they are about to change. Its unmistakable. Now it's going to look and feel like fall very soon.

Man, that low down south, near Dallas, TX is a great spot to track up NE towards our area and dump a ton of snow during the Winter months.

Only, in Nino years these often slide more easterly from there, thus see 2009-10. Not saying that happens every time over this coming winter, but let's see what kind of hand lady luck is dealing us down the road. Every season has it's twists-n-turns and even very similar tele-connections won't end up with the same net results. That's kinda the fun of it. There's just enough "unknowns" to keep it interesting. Don't touch that dial..

Exactly! As you say, that's what makes it fun. I like the anticipation of how all these Winter outlooks will turn out.

I've noticed that next week's chillier airmass has been modified a bit. I am hoping it has nothing to do w any tropical systems affecting it. Its difference in modification is about 5 to 10 degrees warmer.

A little water with this system.

attachicon.gifScreenshot_20180922-035239_Facebook.jpg

To my knowledge, that is the second-greatest 24-hour rainfall in Oklahoma history.

Records are going to be destroyed later this year for other reasons.

Just wow.

  :o  D*mn! that's a ton of water

I kicked on the furnace this morning. When I woke up it was a bit chilly. wow!

I closed my windows pro-actively last night so our 49F didn't require a furnace. I did use my electric space heaters during our early month chill tho. A sunny and very pleasant 61F right now.

Last night I had my windows closed, but no AC. YAY! Not sure when I will switch the mode from AC to Heat. I will wait till October arrives, in case we get another warm-up.

It got cold in parts of lower Michigan last night.  Here are some reported lows Roscommon 29° Leota (Clare county) 30° Baldwin 33° Grayling and  Cadillac 34° West Branch 35° so there looks to have been areas of frost in central lower Michigan.

A good sign we won't have to wait another month to get leafs changing around here like we did last autumn

Marshall hit the 65F GRR called for spot-on. They've been shooting about 2-4 degs low on the hot days so it worked out on a chillier day. Was almost October like when I was working in my yard. Just sans the changing leafs. Plenty of brown ones came down with all the winds tho. A solid 3 weeks since we've had more than a sprinkle here and now my front lawn is crispy again while the back remains green and plush and required cutting. Really need some rain from this Tuesday deal to pan out around here. Ofc, Iowa could share some, they seem to have plenty to share.

I agree...some needed rain would be nice, especially for YBY. Tbh, I received nearly 1.50" couple days ago, so I will not complain.

Cloudy and a somewhat cool 63° at my house. The race is now on!! If September ended yesterday this would have been the warmest September in recorded Grand Rapids history.  But it did not end yesterday and we still have 7 days to go. The current mean at GRR is 69.1° Last September was the tenth warmest in GRR and last years mean was 66.5° will this year be a top 10?? we shall see.
