September 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

I’ll probably reseed it all in the spring. If it comes back it’s going to be pretty patchy.

Why bother if you are not going water it? It will only be green for a month or two next year again. Never understood why everyone lets their lawns die during the best time of year to enjoy it. The lawns in Richland this weekend looked so nice. Makes everything look well-maintained and so much better. Better to tear out all grass if you won't water and go with drought tolerant plants like my parents did in Bellingham. They have the best looking yard in the neighborhood when everything turns brown and that happens every summer there.

This is in an area that gets about 6 inches of rain a year... this goes on for miles in Richland.

Everyone in this area waters their lawns and the entire area looks so nice.

Should be much easier to have this over here in the summer. But most neighborhoods in Seattle look like a mess by July with dead grass and weeds.

Don’t the east side lawns have warm season grasses. They are probably brown in the winter. We have cool season grasses that are green fall, winter, spring.

And yes, if I renovate the lawn I would probably water it. We do water our front lawn but not our back. Also, I would probably reduce the size of the grassed area.

Its dark and raining all winter... does not really matter. Summer is when you want to be outside and enjoying your yard.

The lawns in Richland reminded me of Minnesota where neighborhoods look so lush and well-maintained all summer. Everyone there waters as well when it gets dry but they get lots of help from nature.

Its not really an issue in the Snoqualmie Valley or in my area. Lawns stay green in the valley here no matter how long we go without rain. My lawn would go dormant if we did not water because all the water drains off so well up here. But everyone up here has sprinkler systems installed. Except us since we could not afford it when we built.

But in Seattle... its just an ugly brown mess by mid-summer every year. Looks terrible.

Looks nauseatingly fake.

Looks well-maintained. And so does the rock landscaping they have all over in Arizona.

But letting everything go dormant with brown lawns filled with weeds... that looks like everyone gave up.

All I ever noticed in Tri-Cities were trailer parks. The place is a total dump.

Median household income in Richland is $70K.

And in West Richland its $84K. Higher than Seattle.

Living up to the name! Maybe it is Pasco I am judging the area by. I know I have mainly been through Pasco, it was such a hideous dump of a city I think I just figured Richland and Kennewick were the same, and then I journeyed north to the absolute travesties that are the northern Columbia Basin cities of Ephrata and Moses Lake.

Co-worker just moved to Ephrata... they love it there.

Anyways... Silverton is not nearly as wealthy as Richland. ;)

Who cares. It is a nice town that is solidly middle class. It is a little expensive these days, but there were some great housing values 6-7 years ago that I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of. I would take Silverton over Richland any day. Of course I am biased, but it also is a much more picturesque town, and has an atmosphere that really can't be matched. I was so lucky to grow up here.

I went to a Lake Oswego football game a couple years ago and there were 500 people in the crowd not paying attention. Went to a Silverton game last year and there were 5,000 people going crazy, glued to the game. Can't beat that small town atmosphere, the sense of community, and the history of the town. Just a unique place.

I agree. Silverton is more scenic. So is North Bend and we LOVE our high school football here!

You were the one making generalized statements that all of the Tri-Cities is a complete dump and nothing but trailer parks. You are very wrong.

Overall I think Western Washington tops Western Oregon for scenery and overall livability. Eastern Oregon blows Eastern Washington away though. Personal preference of course, but aside from Walla Walla and Spokane, E. Washington is pretty blah.

I have never been to North Bend, but from the pics you post it looks amazing. And next time I am in the Tri-Cities area I will check out Richland.

North Bend sounds like Silverton... small town feel and real sense of community.

That is something I like about the PNW. We have a lot of really nice small towns. Monmouth where TigerWoodsL is from is another really nice small town. Out in the midwest, at least Oklahoma/Kansas a lot of the small towns are very economically depressed and just run down, not nice places to live. We are very lucky here in that regard that we have so many livable small towns.

That’s pretty flat/boring, though. Looks like an anthropogenically fluffed-up version of Kansas.

Even we have more interesting terrain just outside the beltway. This is just 30 minutes from our house.

Having spent some time in the DC area the past couple of years I can testify to this. The area especially east of DC in Virginia and Maryland is really really nice. And pretty affordable compared to what you would think. Once you got about 30-40 miles east of DC it seemed quite a bit less expensive than similar homes/properties in the PNW. That house would be well over a million out here.

I think your area is very nice despite your constant complaints. I could easily live there.

You’d probably enjoy it here more than me. The summers are just too long/drawn out for my liking. They start instantly like a switch flip in May, and die slowly during the month of September. If that were reversed, I’d be fine.

I do enjoy the months of October/November, though. It’s by far our nicest and sunniest period. The lower humidity and longer nights finally allow temperatures to start dropping at night, and it still warms up into the 60s during the afternoon. You won’t ever hear me complain about that. :)

Great question... I want to know that myself.

I suppose part of it is that there are more people who can work remotely now thanks to technology and live wherever they want.    My company is one of them... we have people in Toronto and San Francisco and in Dallas.

The Seattle Times recently did a story about the housing boom east of the mountains thanks to the strong economy in Seattle and the ability to work remotely.  People are bringing their west side equity and building homes over there to get away from the traffic and for sunnier weather and driving up home prices and its becoming a problem for locals.   They are getting priced out of their own home towns.

https://www.seattletimes.com/business/seattle-areas-economic-boom-splashes-over-the-cascades-bringing-work-and-worries/

Explosive growth in “the 206 economy” is reverberating across the mountains in towns like Wenatchee and Chelan, bringing some new jobs but also new concerns as tourists and homebuyers from the wealthier Puget Sound region bid up housing prices and reshape the area’s economy.

Even Wenatchee, three hours from Seattle, is emerging as a kind of virtual bedroom community for the Puget Sound region. Steve King, director of the city’s economic development office, is only half joking when he says Wenatchee is becoming “part of the Seattle metro area.”
