This kinda goes along with those warm-looking CFS monthlies Tim just posted:

"El Nino Conditions Growing Increasingly Likely This Winter."

https://www.mercuryn.../10/11/el-nino/

We've had a spike upwards. Hopefully we can keep it under +1 this winter.

I mentioned a few days ago that one of the analogs to Hurricane Michael was Hurricane Gladys in 1968, another Florida hurricane that made landfall in October.

Well there's another analog and it's the 1898 Georgia hurricane. It was the last major hurricane to strike Georgia since Michael did it yesterday and like Michael did it in October.

I thought I'd point it out because both 1968-69 and 1898-99 were cold and snowy winters here in the PNW. They were also 8-9 winters which this one is as well.

Will we run out of oil one day? I'm actually really clueless when it comes to oil/gas prices.

Weather-related OT, but Michael has developed a “sting jet” type feature on its backside due to moisture gradients ahead of the incoming front. The system’s internal dynamics are phasing with the front..really cool!

This is NC/S-VA right now:

https://twitter.com/...8461828096?s=21

This “sting jet” feature could actually work its way up here after midnight and deliver some rough winds. Figures this historically humid Indian summer would come to an explosive end. 💥

There was one giant severe thunderstorm warning spanning much of the state of NC and parts of S-VA for 70mph winds lasting several hours. Yikes.

I’m concerned about the trees here given how saturated everything already is..and 2-3”+ of rain will fall over the next 6hrs. I’m expecting some weak wood to fall tonight.

Beautiful day. Just wish we were having 3-4 like this as opposed to 10-12.

At least the 18z ensembles are hinting at some sort of shake up.*

*And yes Tim, I know the EPS shows ridging through day 5,000.

12Z EPS sort of showed a little breakdown around day 9 or 10 if you squint... then ridging rebounds.

Must have been very localized... the status was finally breaking up in the Seattle area at noon and looks like it was gone by around 1.

The UW site has a 24-hour satellite loop available.   You actually run a loop for an entire month or even season.   I once ran the visible satellite loop for the entire summer of 2010 on there just out of curiosity   :)

Ahhh... you meant in real time in 2010. No... I did not know that archive was available until 2 or 3 years ago. You can only go back to 2007. I also ran the loop for all of December 2008 which was interesting.
