October 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

The moon is insanely bright tonight, like a super moon. Anyone else noticing it?

Feels like one of those old-fashioned autumns with subfreezing temperatures under the full harvest moon and crystal clear skies and the smell of leaves permeating the air. The foxes calling out from the woods also adds to the autumn demeanor.

It was quite cloudy earlier... but just let the dog out and the clouds are now thin and broken and I did notice how bright it was out there.   No need at all for the yard light.

Very mild night here... no chance of freezing.    Still in the mid-50s.

I assume those can mean the same thing, or arise via similar conduits? The latter is a result of inverted moisture gradients, often in warm seclusion situations. I haven’t heard the term “barrier jet” used in the literature I’ve read, but I’m not a mesoscale guy either, so what do I know?

I'm not overly versed in this stuff either, but those definitely aren't the same thing. A barrier jet forms due to interaction with topography + vertical constraint by an overlying stable column. Air can't rise so its redirected parallel to a mountain range, i.e. south-north in the case of Dec '07. It's an LLJ that essentially functions like a gap wind due to the horizontal + vertical constraints. That explains its strength and persistence during a pressure gradient-driven setup like '07.

A sting jet, on the other hand, is entirely driven by cyclogenesis. They're actually pretty rare here, since we don't see classic storm development with well defined WCB, CCB, etc. like you do on the East Coast or in Europe.

The world would be a much better place if everywhere was like Baffin Island. I could definitely live there.

Rain has not started here yet... 55 degrees out there.   Be nice to have the SEA radar now.    They don't even update the status.

SEA was +5 yesterday after a few days of below normal temps...the rain broke the inversion and it warmed up.   Looks like the next few days will continue putting up larger positive departures than the ridgy period... with rain and some 63/53 type days.    Yesterday was 60/49 and +5.

That ridging sure was a nightmare.    ;)

This is one of my favorite fall weather behind a windstorm or snowstorm...these warm breezy dry mornings ahead of the incoming frontal system. Love it!!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Is the Seattle radar down still? It shows some rain over Seattle but definitely not as much as we have been getting this morning as it has been raining at a decent clip all morning.

SEA and PDX radars are both down.

So any web site with a radar overlay is only going to be based on the coastal radar and look more sparse over Seattle than reality.

Halloween looking soggy. Tim may have to trick-or-treat indoors this year.

Lots of upsloping action here over the next week so we should finally start filling the coffers. Now there will be 6 months of this and then we will go back to endless ridging in April-Nov 2019.

All comes down to timing... I don't give a crap what it does during the day.    All that matters is from 6-7:30 p.m.

12Z GEM and 12Z ICON showed the rain moving out by evening.

And we can always use an umbrella!   We also have some places we can go to the west in Snoqualmie Ridge or the Issaquah Highlands if it comes down to a rain shadow situation.

You should schedule a trick or treating reservation in Ellensburg just to be safe.

I know here in Seattle it has been at least 4 years since a dry Halloween at trick or treat time. It has actually been a pain the last few as it has been a cold windy rain so Halloween has come with meltdowns from our kids (ages 6, 4, and 1). Maybe this year can buck the trend for a few hours in the evening.

This sucks having it down. Have to use the Aldergrove radar or the coast radar for now. Been a steady light rain or heavy mist all morning so far.
