I definitely wouldn't call the 12z ensembles worse... Odds of at least a dry chilly period see to be increasing. I'd say 50/50 odds we see something similar to what we saw at the end of December/early January 2014/15 and 15/16.

The ensemble mean wasn't as strong with the offshore ridge as the 6z mean in the LR, and placement wasn't quite as nice either. But maybe more good individual members?

The North Bend Horticulture Club holds its flower opening gala each year on January 16.

There are private events in January and February... but the main gala each year is in mid-March.    :)

The mean wasn't significantly different, a touch warmer. More members in the -4 to -8C range, but no members below -10C. The 06z had one member that got down to -15C.

Looking back over those later 2014/15 and 15/16 periods I certainly hope we can do better this winter. But I would put the odds of something like that at about 50% right now in the December 25-Jan. 5 period. Probably about 25% we see something better at this point. Here is what those cool periods looked like at a couple locations.

I would generally class 2014-15 in the same category as 1991-92 and 2002-03 as complete and utter duds.

2015-16 was slightly better and at least active with the super wet December, it goes in the crappy but not absolute dud category with like a 2004-05 or 99-00. Salem and PDX did at least manage freezing high temps...

I had a few inches at the end of November 2014 that stayed on the ground for a week so it wasn’t complete dud up here.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I'd put the odds of the rest of this winter going better than 2014-15 and 2015-16 at 75-80%. Better meaning more lowland snow and colder temps.

The script is quite different than those years in so many ways...ENSO weaker, fall went considerably differently, and much lower solar.

Sort of interesting how the front yesterday was not able to break the inversion in eastern and central WA.

Its still very cloudy and foggy over there.

November 2014 was a pretty interesting run. Definitely the highlight of that cold season.

I know, was just adding my thoughts beyond that. There seems to a fairly widespread belief on here that if you don't score by early January it will be over and the rest of the "winter" will go similar to those two years.

Just goes to show how rare it is to get a year with like no action at all. 02-03 was awful but had that weird event in late Oct-early Nov

91-92 on the other hand had absolutely nothing. Easily the worst since I moved to Oregon.

To clarify I meant a 25% of something better in the December 25-Jan 5 time frame. Overall if I had to put money on it I would guess this winter ends up better than 2015-16 and not quite as good as 2006-07.

Did the rest of the cascades have a good snow in '15-'16 or was it mostly southern Oregon?

Might be a bit early to call December...

Not really..the monthly mean will resemble the aforementioned, even if there’s a flip at the very end.
