You weren't here last year at this time. Phil had said we had a real shot at another January 1950. THAT was the most anticipated January ever. I think this post was put up so early because people are tired of December.

Ah, 2017-18. What a disappointment. Predicted to be as cold as 2016-17, yet it was warmer and drier than normal.

 

At least we got more than six days of sunshine the entire winter. Can’t say that about 16-17...

Fewest since Dec 2015 which had only 140. Let's hope Jan can bring something worth getting hyped about because I have a bad feeling we will have a very warm and dry winter in 19-20 so if we fork this one, we can probly start thinking about 2+ years down the road.

Doubtful 19'-20' will be a torchy winter.

I mean, I'd be happy for them, but they had awesome windstorm and several other small wind events while PDX has had a bunch of nothing this year.

 

EDIT: Oh, holy crap, I didn't see the nice PDX and Willamette Valley snow event just before, I'm actually blind. WOW. This would be amazing. Fun times ahead, it looks quite active.

GFS shows regional 1+ inch snowfall through hr 192

 

Gonna need to smoke after that beauty. Those lows to the south would likely bring snow for most of the valley if we could get 850s a teensy bit colder.

 

That said, this is looking like a pretty significant n/s event coming up.

If these lows can come up consecutively like that, it could mean a lot of dumbbelling action with some of them stalling out around Cape Blanco

With the jet this far suppressed, yeah anything is possible.

Totals would be a lot higher than shown with upsloping into the s valley with lows coming in so close together keeping valley gradients offshore. This is looking pretty promising...

6z GFS Ensembles trending a bit colder too allowing for a possible 1-3 day event especially Troutdale/Gresham eastward through the Gorge.

00z ICON had that first low too but much weaker and too far south.

 

 

 

However it did trend much stronger on the 06z.
