The WRF and the ECMWF both show King County being the winner Friday night.  Totally awesome!  What incredible timing also, getting a big snow on a Friday night.  And how about that third big trough being shown around day 10?

I'd love to be in a forest steppe/cold grassland biome with regular snow in the summer.  :D

Yeah no thanks. I'd like a climate like Sapporo, Japan. Very snowy winters but not outrageously cold, then drier and mild summers with highs in the 70s and the occasional heatwave. Pretty much my perfect climate. Gotta have some variation.

Where the heck is wx_statman? With the huge number of weather records shattered (and still to be shattered) across the country this seems like a weird time for him to vanish.

Good question.  This is right up his alley.

I totally agree except I would like warm summers and guaranteed cold and snow in the winter.  Parts of Central Washington have the basic biome you are talking about minus the summer snow.

I finally cleared out here. 16F and dropping. I feel a zero or lower in the next few days.

I would think at some point during this month we will see some sub zero reading around our area much like Dec. 2008.

The east coaster up at 230AM watching the EPS roll in might be the ideal candidate. ;)

I just can't find an analog for a period when it was below freezing here for most of a 12-day period here in February.  And it might end up being even more.

We have had two days below freezing already and the ECMWF says that at least 8 of the next 10 days will be below freezing and the other two days would be barely be above.   And then also find a match with insane amounts of snow... as opposed to a cold, dry period.

Looking back at historically cold February periods... it appears that its really hard to avoid getting well into the 40s at some point during a cold period at this time of year.

I wouldn't be shocked to see you spike near 40 on Thursday. Looks like many places will.

1929 and 1936 were the 20th century benchmarks for sustained February cold. This could certainly make a run at that.

33 and cloudy. Didn’t think we would get to freezing tonight but it is looking increasingly likely.

I don't care if it's the 3rd storm yet to come and still 6 days out, time to break out the top 10 list for our Portland weenies:

24 hour snowfall records in Portland:

1) 15.5" - 1/21/1943, Downtown
2) 15" - 1/2/1902, Downtown
3) 14.4" -1/21/43, PDX
4) 14" 12/22/1892, Downtown
5) 13.5" - 12/10/1919, Downtown
6) 12.8" - 1/1/1937, Downtown
7) 12.4" - 12/16/1884, Downtown
8) 12" - 2/12/1995, PDX
9) 11.8" 1/10-11/2017, Downtown
10) 10.60" 1/13-1/14/1950 PDX

December 20-22, 1892 is the benchmark for Portland snowstorms. 27.5" fell in a 60 hour period. The same storm dropped 4-5 feet near Olympia, 2 feet near Tacoma, and a foot near Seattle. Our old climate was fun.

Along with a 22" depth, which for some reason never entered the record books.

I would agree on this one in particular.  This has a very decent chance of being historic.

4-5 feet in 1 storm? Geesh, how long did that take to fall?

I’m down to 21... probably gonna hit the teens again for second straight night. 16 last night.

I was impressed when I saw how cold Boeing Field was last night.  Normally I run about 10 degrees colder than them and my low was 16.

There is about 8" of snow on the ground there, which definitely helped out a lot.
