March 2019 Observations and Discussion

Been very busy with school, but trying to keep up with this fiesta! Looks like some concrete here this weekend followed by what could be a very large issue in a rain storm. Hoping that stays away. Anything that does melt is just going to stand around. When that historic cold spell hit there were like 4 inches of snow, so the ground is frozen solid for quite a bit down I would assume. Here's to hoping for the least flooding possible as it is inevitable with this huge snowpack.

79* in Crazy Town, Tx !

Got up to 84* in the house and had to turn the a/c on for a brief spurt as it was so miserable.

High chance of about 1/2" of rain tonight and more on Mon through Wed. Temps will be slowly dropping but only into the 50's.

Everyone is getting the Spring bug bites right now.

Enjoy the ice flows. All we have is wind, dust, and pollen.

Half sick from Mt. cedar allergies tonight.

MPX mentions "Urban and small stream" flooding issues in morning AFD-

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 436 AM CST Sat Mar 9 2019

The main concern in the long term continues to trend toward an
urban/small stream flooding threat for the middle of the upcoming
week as confidence is increasing that the mid-week system will bring
widespread rainfall to the area with little or no snow. In addition,
roughly 60 hours from mid day Tuesday through Thursday night will be
above freezing with dew points warmer than freezing for a good
portion of that along with breezy southerly winds. These conditions
along with the expected rainfall will melt/release some water from
the current snowpack.

GFS is really slowing the system down for next week. Has the low all the way down to the mid 970s out in western Kansas and then it occludes/weakens and creeps slowly east. This is good news here in eastern Nebraska as it keeps the heaviest rain away from our part of the state but pulls it further west. Still looking like a good bet of 1-3" though, but at least it's not the 5-6" it was showing.

Clouds are slowly increasing. Also, a wind advisory might be needed for tomorrow as winds could gusts as high as 40 to 45mph. Current temp of 32F.

Another .50 inch of rain this morning we didn’t need. Crazy saturation in KC with another wet storm due in early in the week. Need some dry/windy weather.

Snow pack is gone, however, large piles still remain. Currently 64 degrees right now, won’t last long though, west wind about to come screaming in.

At the suggestion of many, I decided to clear a path through the snowpack between my house and the neighbor’s where the drainage goes out to the street. I was blown away how much water there was. We had .9” of rain with temps in the mid 30s today. I stepped into the 10-12” of snow and sunk all the way to the ground into the slop underneath. Once I took a scoop of snow down to the grass, there was standing water 3-4” deep. When I started scooping a path the water would start flowing, but would basically stop up against the edge of the snowpack and would build up to 4-6” deep. It’s a good thing we have a couple days before the next rainfall, as it’s still looking like 2-3” of rain possible. The local NRD’s are talking about maybe using dynamite to break up the ice on the rivers to prevent ice jams

Welcome to "spring-time" of the two times we use I would like to stay on this time all year long. But then I am not a morning person and I would rather have the extra hour of daylight in the evening. It is kind of winy this morning and here in my area there is still a good amount of snow on the ground. The current temperature here is now 35.

With winds of 26mph right now, and an air temperature of 29 degrees, it only feels like 14 degrees here in Cedar Rapids. There is still a decent snowpack on the ground. Kind of feels like Mid February instead of Mid-March. Looking forward to reaching the mid 50's this week. Should be able to melt most of the snow, but it will take awhile for all of the big piles to melt here.

It appears there is an inch or two of solid ice at the bottom of these snow piles.

Yeah- I’m not sure how the airport missed the record. We had a good 3+ inches of slop yesterday. (On top of the rain). And I’m only a mile or so from the airport.

My gosh I thought the record would be way higher than that?! 59.4" seems a little low considering the latitude. Grand Island's all-time record snow in a season is 86.7". Although that was back in the early 20th century. They received 78.6" back in the infamous 83-84 winter season.

I decided to grade my Winter here in MBY w a D. Very poor Winter indeed. December was lost. First 3 weeks of January went down the drain. Action began a little towards the end of the Month and into Feb (most of the month, but small amounts of snow and 2 decent ones). I was neva in a WSW all Winter, just WWA. The two storms that gave me 8"+, was a WAA and not a WSW. Also, NOAA did a terrible job on forecasting snowstorms in SEMI this year.

After reading this interesting stat, the warmth coming this week is going to feel like a heat wave!

The last time #Chicago was 54° degrees was on Oct 31. So today's the 130th consecutive day below 54°, which is tied for 3rd longest on record. The streak is likely to end this week, if not Wed, then on Thu, which will make it the 2nd longest behind 156 day in back 1880-81!

Sunny skies and feels like Spring outside, even though temps are in the 20s. Cannot wait for this warmth coming on Thursday. Temps will soar in the 60s and would not rule out a few 70s along w some severe weather.

Looks like after a brief coldspell late this week into the weekend, more seasonable temps will dominate throughout the rest of the month (40s). Hopefully, it can get warmer.

There is a big difference in the snow pack here in the Grand Rapids area.  Here at my house there is still a good 5”of snow on the ground but in the just to the south and east of here there is a lot of bare ground.  Any way the one day big warm up is coming and most of the snow will be gone by this weekend.  The big snow piles will hang on for some time yet.

Here are the warmest and lowest temperatures by month here in Grand Rapids since last September March (so far) 42/8, February 48/-2, January 51/-10, December 53/13, November 52/20, October 84/27, September 90/40. It has not been 60 or more since October 14th
