March 2019 Weather Discussion in the PNW

BLI snowman

Recommended Posts

Looks like -10 at Spokane 17SSW as well.

The crazy thing is there will another bout of very cold lows over there late this weekend/early next week, with another arctic airmass moving in. Could get into some historic territory with what looks to be clear skies and very dry air combined with the unseasonably deep snowpack over most of the east side, even in the lower basins.

"Los Angeles did not reach 70 degrees in February for the first time in at least 132 years."

Pretty impressive.

Yeah, I'll be curious to see what kind of readings they pull off. Pretty incredible stuff.

Here's a good one - Wilbur, WA never rose above 34 in February. First time they didn't hit 40 in February (records back to 1899!), and they didn't even come close.

Only three other months have stayed under 35 previously, all during January (1929, 1937, 1979).

Spokane hit -1.

Over on the west side I see a lot of low-mid 40s already.

With forecast lows in the mid-20s in the Portland area early next week, I'm trying to remember the last time PDX got below the upper 20s in March. It looks like their March benchmark for this century so far is only 28 (2012 and 2002).

Edit: It appears the last time they fell below 28 in March was 3/3/89 (low of 19).

Opheim 10N, Montana pulled off their coldest month in 63 years of records.

Average ended up at -9.0, smashing the previous coldest Feb set just last year (-0.2 in 2018).

Previous coldest any-month was -8.2 in January 1969.

This station only goes back to 1956, obviously missing some big hitters like Feb. 1936.

Been tough to come by. That's a really weak benchmark for March for 30 years!

Also, definite UHI influence there with the March stats at PDX.

19 of 49 years hit 27 or lower, until 1989...about once every 2-3 years.

I also think it is a total lack of airmasses like we are about to see. Up here we've had a lot of snow in March over the past 10 years or so, but it has all come with pretty strong onshore flow. There were plenty of times in the late 40s, 50s, and 60s Silver Falls had lows in the teens in March, and we haven't even been close while I've lived up here. I think the most impressive day overall in the past 10+ years was a 37/24 on 3/11/09.

Marginal overrunning event on Wednesday... I would not count on the gray shaded area being anything though.

In fact... every day after Monday is in the mid-40s or higher in the Seattle area.

That's true, we definitely haven't had many impressive airmasses in March in recent decades. At the same time, the March 2009 airmass could have produced a lower minimum than 28 with less UHI influence. I.e. it produced 24 in Eugene, tied for their coldest in March since 1971...

Yeah. If I remember right Mark was forecasting a low of 25 at PDX with that one as well.

Crazy, EUG couldn’t even manage a freeze last night despite all that snowpack. Hope they can pull off an impressive number or two at some point before it’s gone.

I only made it down to 30 surprisingly and I still have 6 inches of snow on the ground.

Yeah, can't do much with a saturated airmass and southerly breeze. Need some of that dry air to advect in the next couple days. Will be an uphill battle trying to keep the snowpack until then, with that March sunshine.
