Made it down to 51F this morning with a high near 80F expected. A brief return to the 90s this weekend but then nicer weather returns.

62/41 day here yesterday and showers here this morning. Things have turned decidedly Fall here now with the chilly nights and leaf changing in full swing. Still waiting on my first freeze though which seems possible tonight depending on cloud cover.

Looking like a brief warm up into the low 70's this weekend with some showers before highs drop back into the 60's with lows dropping back into the 30's next week.

It has been one hot year here and the trend continues.    So far here are the departure temperatures (in degrees) from average:

January = + 6.3

February = +4.4

March = +3.9

April = +1.8

May = +3.8

June = +3.7

July = +4.8

August = +1.8

September = +3.9

This may end up being the hottest year on record, beating 2012.  There is no UHI here either.

Although we have had several frost at the house, the airport still hasn't had a frost yet.   The coldest it has gotten so far this season at the airport is 36 degrees on 8/29, 9/4, 9/7, 9/8, 9/10, and 9/13.

At the airport, I think the latest first frost we have had was 9/21 so if there isn't a cool down, we could be flirting with that record.

Also, every day so far this month has been in the 80's which is something very unusual for an elevation of 6250 feet in September.   Thus far the average high is 85.6 and the average low 40.0, which is remarkably warm.

At home:

Coldest temperature thus far in 2018:   -26 on 2/21

Warmest temperature thus far in 2018:  99 on 7/8 (All time record high)

Precip thus far in 2018:   7.89 inches

Snowfall thus far in 2018:   35.7 inches

Last frost of early summer:  7/1

First frost of late summer:  8/29

Last snow of late spring:  5/1

First snow of early fall:

Looks like I'm missing a blowtorch month back home. After a seasonable start to September, the last few days have been in the low to mid 90s, and that will continue for the next few days.

Hopefully it will actually feel like fall when I return next week.

Cool anomalies soothe the soul.

47F at my place this morning, north of a shallow cold front. South of the front there is a huge fire that may burn homes today.

It could go from the 20's to 90's today; we'll see.  The temperature has already dropped 49 degrees since sunset a few hours ago.  Today's high was 88 and the current temperature is 39.  The morning of the 14th was the first official frost at the official weather station (a bit later than average).

If it really does drop to 31 in town, it will be in the 20's at my house almost for sure.  Since the afternoon high is supposed to be 89, it only needs one degree above that to reach 90.

28 this morning and sitting at 86 at 12:25. Four more degrees to hit 90. If it does hit 90, this will tie for the record latest 90 in the season (tie with 9/15/1990).

We had a windstorm yesterday that darkened the sky with dust from the fields. I'd rate it up with the high winds of the Columbia Gorge but with a sky filled with dirt. Made for an interesting drive from Twin Falls to Rupert. Temps were very comfortable though. Around 80 before but dropped to mid 70's with the windstorm. First dust storm that I've ever experienced!

It didn't hold because it cooled down that evening behind the cold front to 64F. Still, it was pretty impressive! It only reached 90F that afternoon, so a 16F spread.

I remember a late summer day a few years ago where the temp only barely fell to about 80 overnight because of the winds. But like your day, we had an evening low much cooler.

Long range ensemble forecasts have been hinting at accumulating snowfall here about 9-10 days from now.

The 00z ECMWF operational run last night showed 700mb temps dropping to -10C with over an inch of precip. Plenty cold enough to support sticking snow. In fact, the ECMWF shows 10-14" of snowfall at my location and 8-12" in town. Long way to go but fun to see nonetheless.

It's hard to maintain temperatures that warm for such a prolonged time. Probably won't have any more nights like that this fall so thats nice.

Looks like the 12z GFS is showing a similar upper level pattern on days 9-10 so the ECMWF might be onto something...

Models are really struggling now on the pattern change beyond Friday. The 12z Canadian shows about a foot snowfall for Bozeman on Monday/Tuesday verses the 12z ECMWF shows nothing now after yesterdays big snowfall runs.

The 12z GFS shows a couple inches of snowfall for Monday/Tuesday then goes bonkers and shows an historic late September snowstorm for most of Montana. Tough call at this point.

Yeah, quite a bit of run-to-run variability. A few runs have even shown a rain/snow mix for me, but most are pretty dry and just a bit too warm for that.

Denver just hit 90 for the 8th day in a row. This is a record for September.

Make it 9.

Hopefully that will be it for the year. And would definitely be nice if the big cool down next week verifies.

Really hope the developing ridge next week in western NA can be far enough west to deliver cool temps here. Right now it's close in the models, but we're right on the edge of cool/warm anomalies.

No substantial cool anomalies expected here. With todays trough we are down near normal finally but it warms right back up tomorrow.

Been in the 50's here the last couple of days with some showers. Also finally dropped to freezing for this first time this season ending my growing season right at 100 days.

The operational and ensemble models have really taken a turn to much colder for next week. The ECMWF shows highs dropping right back into the 50's beginning on Sunday before the bottom really drops with highs staying below freezing throughout next weekend with snowfall. You have to go all the way back to 1985 since Bozeman saw a high at or below freezing in September.

Fun run to look at but is it just more model noise?

Cold Season 2018/19:

Total snowfall: 0"
Highest daily snowfall 0"

Highest snow depth: 0"

Coldest high: 55.0º
Coldest low: 32.1º

Number of subzero days: 0

The last freeze here was on March 25th.

Our growing season currently stands at 180 days... we reached 100 days on July 4th.    ;)

The last freeze in Seattle was on February 26th... putting their growing season currently at 207 days.

Our garden is still going strong and very productive right now.   My wife could never live in Bozeman!

Yeah obviously people do not move or live here for their gardens. It's all about the mountains and snow here.  ;)

Got home just in time for a nice little cool front. Low of 48 this morning, still just a pleasant 61 out.

We'll warm back up into the 80s this weekend, but then cool into the 60s/70s next week.

No real storms in sight yet, though.  :(

Another 1-2 weeks, or more, of dry weather coming for me too. At least its pleasant now with either no more 90s, or perhaps one last shot this weekend.

We spent the night at my parents' house in West Valley. I was really surprised to see frost on the ground this morning. It must be a local cold pocket.
