Arctic front currently pushing back through here. Looks pretty moisture starved so maybe just an inch or two of snowfall.

Highs once again back around zero with lows down to around 20 below again for the next couple of days. Slight moderation on Tues/Wed before yet another push of cold air on Thursday with possible snow.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Pretty crazy how your first two years in Bozeman coincided with two of the harshest winters that area has seen back to back in many years.

Sunny and cold for me. Some areas of southern Utah that normally don't see snow did pretty well last night. 2-6" around St George.

Ever since the Arctic front arrived about 48 hours ago, I've seen off and on very light snow that has amounted to a grand total of about 3/4" accumulation.

Pretty unusual to see a light precip event with this kind of duration. Looks like it will dry up over the next 12 hours, and then some snow should return later in the week.

Temps-wise, I've been stuck between 10-20. Though we'll warm up over the next couple days, temps look to remain much below normal for at least the next week.

Bit of a surprise with some lake effect today. Just shy of 3" of accumulation for today. Another 1-2" tonight/tomorrow it looks like.

Looking at 1936 across Northern Montana. Absolutely astounding numbers.

Havre had a monthly mean of -12.9

By comparison this month so far is -7.0 which is a -28.2 departure. Hard to imagine a monthly departure of -28.2 not being all that close to the record. Especially in a climate where a -6 monthly departure can put you in the top 5 coldest.

Yeah...I'm not sure what to think of this month anymore. I don't think anyone saw this one coming in an El Niño year.

It's been pretty crazy to see how capable this climate still is.

How are the locals handling it? Do they seem to care at all that they're seeing one of the coldest Februaries on record?

Snow from Vegas over to St. George. Snow also in the hills above LA.

Also, Flagstaff area getting destroyed. Good chance today ends up breaking the all-time record of 31" in a day.

Flagstaff officially has broken its all-time daily record with 33" so far, and more coming down.

Unbelievable storm. And it's far from over...expecting another 7-11" tonight, and 3-5" tomorrow!

This puts them up to at least 65" on the month, which blows away their previous February record of 45.5" from 1990. Also up to their 4th snowiest month of all time.

Gotta love solar min!

Not really! I think what everyone is noticing is that our snow base is unusually high as we head into late February with another big storm incoming later this weekend.

Another below zero morning here, my 13th day of the month so far. Looks like it dropped down to -17F at the airport which is a new record low for the day besting -16 in 1942.

Top tier cold month looks to also bring a top tier storm later this weekend into next week now as well. Tough to pin down snowfall amounts at this point but it's looking like 8-15" Saturday night - Tuesday right now.

Cut Bank is even more dramatic, it appears. Monthly record is -11.4 in Feb 1936, and 2nd coldest is more than 13 degrees warmer! The current month would shatter their coldest Feb. record if not for 1936, but as it stands they'll at most place a distant 2nd.

Looking pretty likely now for heavy snow here at times beginning later this afternoon through Tuesday. Looks like 12-18"of snow during the period with possibly even more during the second half of next week.

With already a 22" snow base out there this storm will surely break my personal best 30" snow depth record. Even Downtown Bozeman's has a legitimate chance at breaking their snow depth record of 29" set back in February 1942 which has been showing up a lot lately. Bozeman currently has a 14" snow depth.

Light snow began here yesterday afternoon along with another Arctic front. Models now show it snowing almost uninterrupted from now through Thursday with highs staying at or below the teens. Winter Storm Warning is up now through Tuesday.

The snowfall intensity should really increase later today into tonight and Monday. Currently 1F with light snow.

Good WRF run for Missoula this morning, but southerly trend made NWS reduce the totals, I think WRF/mm5 nam are on their own with the low reforming over Wallowa mountains after making the southern landfall.

edit: Looked at the two runs again, seems like we just got a lot stronger low on 12z, 1310m heights  @ 850mb levels.

Mesoscale Discussion 0133
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0544 PM CST Sun Feb 24 2019

Areas affected...portions of southern MT

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 242344Z - 250545Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow will spread east-southeast across southern
Montana late this afternoon and evening. Snowfall rates of 1-2
inches per hour are possible at times through much of the evening
and overnight hours.

DISCUSSION...Snowfall rates will increase into the evening hours
from the HLN to BTM to BZN vicinity toward LWT and BIL and
eventually further east into southeast MT. A strong arctic surface
high will persist over Saskatchewan into the northern Plains
tonight, blocked by a strong cyclone over southeast Canada. As a
result, a tight pressure gradient will remain aligned with the
mountains from the vicinity of the Big Belts southeast across the
Beartooth/Absaroka ranges. This will result in a band of strong
midlevel frontogenesis as this effectively becomes the
quasi-stationary arctic front. Further enhancing snowfall rates is a
stream of warm/moist air from the Pacific at around 700mb, noted in
regional forecast soundings and water vapor imagery. Forecast
soundings from BIL show a saturated dendritic growth zone of nearly
4500 ft through tonight. Additionally, cross section analysis
indicates weak conditional symmetric instability, resulting in
heavier snow bands embedded within the broader area of snowfall. As
a result, snowfall rates around 1-2 inches per hour are expected
this evening into tonight.

High of only 5F yesterday with a low of -4F. Some heavy snow bands moved through here around midnight dropping 6" bringing my 2 day total so far to 8". Up to 28" on the ground now. Looks like Bozeman picked up even more with 10-12" in town overnight.

Currently -7F with moderate snow continuing to fall. Before moving here I didn't think it could snow so heavy with well below zero temps!

I should also add that we are going on 41+ hours of continuous snowfall. Models now show that the snow could continue almost not-stop into Friday morning now.

And then there is this. Feels like we have entered into a new climate regimen out here more resembling the Arctic Circle

Wow that's really bad. I don't like this February here I think it's already colder than January '17, but at least we don't have any highs below 0, and only had 3 windy days this month(Hellgate canyon starts acting like the gorge when there is warm nose being brought into idaho by low pressures).

Also only a couple inches here since the start of this storm, but completely whiteout conditions today.

Yeah its been rough. As you know we usually get some Chinook winds between storms to warm and melt some of the snow but not this month. It's just stayed consistently frigid and the snow just keeps piling up.

The latest 12z Euro run still doesn't get us above 21F over the next 10 days either.

Find that very hard to believe. We had a couple breaks since the initial arctic front where it got above freezing in the sun. Hasn't rained since the day it all began though(actually rained quite high & hard that day, up to 7000' @ snowbowl, nearly entire mountain got a thick crust, so we got miserable skiing for two weeks because of how dry everything was for a while).

700mb.gif?1551132203775Might get ratio killed here tonight, despite temps only slightly above 0, maybe only 10-15:1 ratios for us in western montana and near wyoming border?

I noticed before it got dark that the snow growth actually looked really good here. Biggest flakes since it all began and temps are still around -5F. Wouldn't surprise me if tonight into tomorrow morning surpasses last nights snowfall.

Looks like Bozeman set a new record low high for today with -2F for the high. Beat out -1F set in 2011.

Bozeman Airport also set a new record low high for the day with 0F for the high. Bests 3F set in 2011 as well.

1936 actually ended the month quite warm reaching the 40's the last 3 days of the month with the warmest day getting up to 47!

Kind of the mirror image to this month with the first 2 days of the month reaching the 40's here.
