On Wednesday, astronomers across the globe will hold "six major press conferences" simultaneously to announce the first results of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which was designed precisely for that purpose. https://www.france24.com/en/20190406-scientists-set-unveil-first-picture-black-hole Quote Before You Diagnose Yourself With Depression or Low Self-Esteem,...First Make Sure You Are Not In Fact, Just Surrounded By A$$holes. “If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell.” Gen. Andie
I'm watching for it. It won't be hi-def tv but it will be interesting.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/08/science/black-hole-photo.htmlLike terrified moviegoers seated on the edges of their seats and at the mercy of their imaginations, astronomers expect this week to finally see the monster: a supermassive black hole.At 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday April 10, a group of astronomers who run a globe-girdling network of radio telescopes called the Event Horizon Telescope are expected to unveil their long awaited pictures of a pair of putative black holes. One of the objects sits at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, buried in the depths of interstellar dust and gas, and equivalent in mass to 4.1 million suns that otherwise have disappeared from the visible universe. The other target is in the heart of Messier 87, a giant galaxy in the constellation Virgo, where a black hole 7 billion times the mass of the sun is spewing a jet of energy thousands of light-years across space. Here is an artist's rendition of recent research. It's somewhat circular here, but they expecyit to be a fuzzy, lopsided image. Andie
Additional information : https://eventhorizontelescope.orgThe array of telescopes across the world must be synch together with precision. If any one telescope is off by a fraction the imaging will be blurred and worthless. Any deviation by any cause whatsoever will render any image blurred and data useless. It amounts to corrdinating a ballet with each dancer on a different continent. You can catch it at the National Science Foundation, and the Event Horizon Telescope Project site.As of this post, I am having difficulty finding anything posted at these sites.Check at these sites, or search Event Horizon Telescope Project. I'll be doing the same. Andie
Astronomers Capture First Image of a Black Hole https://eventhorizontelescope.org An international collaboration presents paradigm-shifting observations of the gargantuan black hole at the heart of distant galaxy Messier 87 The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) — a planet-scale array of eight ground-based radio telescopes forged through international collaboration — was designed to capture images of a black hole. Today, in coordinated press conferences across the globe, EHT researchers reveal that they have succeeded, unveiling the first direct visual evidence of a supermassive black hole and its shadow. This breakthrough was announced today in a series of six papers published in a special issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The image reveals the black hole at the center of Messier 87 [1], a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. This black hole resides 55 million light-years from Earth and has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun [2]. The EHT links telescopes around the globe to form an Earth-sized virtual telescope with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution [3]. The EHT is the result of years of international collaboration, and offers scientists a new way to study the most extreme objects in the Universe predicted by Einstein’s general relativity during the centennial year of the historic experiment that first confirmed the theory [4]. Andie
Illustration: The black hole at the center of our Milky Way is 26,000 light-years from Earth and is estimated to be equal to the mass of four million suns like our yellow one. But can it be photographed? That’s what today’s global press conference is about and scientists are enthusiastic. At Yale University, astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan told The New York Times: “It’s exciting, even just technically, to get this up close and personal to a black hole.” Follow on : https://m.facebook.com/ehtelescope/ Quote Before You Diagnose Yourself With Depression or Low Self-Esteem,...First Make Sure You Are Not In Fact, Just Surrounded By A$$holes. “If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell.” Gen.
