Requiem
In preparation for this winter, let's reminisce over the most impressive snow/ice events in the PACNW, specifically the lowland locations. Gonna have to put January 15-28th, 1950 up there for the whole region, that was one impressive sequence of events. December 2008 was something to remember, as was January 1-7, 2004 for Portland and the Valley. December (I believe it was the 24th to the 28th) 1996 was record-breaking for Seattle, dangerous for Portland due to the extraordinarily intense ice storms that ensued. More recently, January 2012 brought some crazy snow to Seattle, and January 10-11th, 2017, brought heavy snowfall to PDX in only a couple hours. Eugene has February 6-8th, 2014 and February 24-25th of last year, both of which brought more than a foot to select areas. So, let's discuss and reminisce, shall we? What are your experience with winter storms in the Pacific Northwest? snow_wizard
January 1880 was jaw dropping in the Puget Sound region. The P-I newspaper stated that somebody measured 76 inches of snow in 3 days on one of the hills on the east side of Seattle (presumably Capitol Hill). In general total snow on the ground after the event was in the 4 to 6 foot range with some places even higher. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! TigerWoodsLibido
Jan, 1969 is the benchmark for maximum insanity in the S Valley. Like 72+ hours of non-stop snowfall from Jan 25-28 with temps at or well below freezing. 36"+ in most places. The whole valley got bombed with that. Would love to see a modern set of models see that event as it developed and just how it happened. I would assume some atmospheric river got stalled to the south and EUG was in a persistent d-band zone? 1 Quote Springfield, Oregon regular season 2023-24 Stats: Coldest high: 25F (Jan 14, 2024) Coldest low: 20F (Jan 14, 2024) Days with below freezing temps: 24 (Most recent: Mar 8, 2024) Days with sub-40F highs: 4 (Most recent: Jan 16, 2024) Total snowfall: 0.0" Total ice: 2.25” Last accumulating snowfall on roads: Dec 27, 2021 (1.9") Last sub-freezing high: Jan 15, 2024 (27F) Last White Christmas: 1990 Significant wind events (gusts 45+): 0 Personal Stats: Last accumulating snowfall on roads: Dec 27, 2021 Last sub-freezing high: Jan 16, 2024 (32F) Last White Christmas: 2008 Total snowfall since joining TheWeatherForums: 42.0" Sub-freezing highs since joining TheWeatherForums: 4 Venmo GoFundMe "College Basketball vs Epilepsy": gf.me/u/zk3pj2 My Twitter @CBBjerseys4hope
