Kansas and Oklahoma Hit By 65+ Quakes.

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this has anything to do with the New Madrid or perhaps a mid continent Fault yet to be discovered, but this is a lot of quakes. Something is moving. Now, is this due to the Grand Solar Minimum or just business as usual ?

This Isn’t Normal: Kansas And Oklahoma Have Been Hit By 65 Earthquakes Within The Last 7 Days

The state of Kansas is certainly known for a lot of things, but earthquakes are not one of them, and that is why what we just witnessed is so startling. According to the Kansas City Star, one county in central Kansas alone has been hit by 11 quakes within the past five days…

Further south, Oklahoma has experienced even more earthquakes than Kansas has over the past seven days. Overall, there has been a total of 65 earthquakes between the two states over the past week.

That definitely isn’t normal, and we should keep a close eye on this.

Would these qualify as "diverse places" in your opinion? Or moreover, "divers" (greek/archaic for diverse)

I wrote about a good few of the points expressed in the article sometime back, in my own thought. A lot of this is a thought shared by folks who haven't forgotten the New Madrid as well.

It isn't fracking. Folks had an excuse when it was Oklahoma, but not Kansas. Not Oregon and not California, who is currently scoffing at small quakes while it has 5-7 sleepy volcanoes as well.

Theres not a more "stochastic" or whatever your heart prefers to call it, setup, than the combination of what you're witnessing today.

300 years is a long time when the average is only 120, or 5 generations.

I knew I could feel them. I hadn't felt many before, but I have this week. No doubt.

Here are some maps to give you a big picture of the mid continent.

Normally quiet, this recent activity can't be chalked up to oil wells, or fracking.

The Guthrie Ok. area swarm may be oil and gas related. There's a great deal of work ongoing there, but I don't buy this gross generalization that's been going on. Mid continent quakes occur and that is just a fact.

Thank you for backing me on that one. I've known better since the swarms back in 2010-11. They're not fracking deeply enough to disturb formation 2 to 7 miles deep. I'm not qualified but I'm not stupid either.

That yellow that extends from New Madrid to your neighborhood down there has been sleepy for a long time. As has my area. In the geological scale of things, your area, mine, and the Appalachian Mountains are connected. They're aged the same and all look similar.

When that one goes, we'll both know it.

In fact, your pictures sort of confirmed that to me. The look, and geological mechanisms of lift had to be at similar periods.

Quote from Encyclopedia of Arkansas. We're not talking about a baby fault here. It may be invisible, but it's the most legit one there is. It takes a lot to ring a church bell in Boston from that distance.

"New Madrid Fault

The New Madrid Fault, also called the New Madrid seismic zone, is actually a series of faults, or fractures, at a weak spot in the earth’s crust called the Reelfoot Rift. It lies deep in the earth and cannot be seen from the surface. The fault line runs roughly 150 miles from Arkansas into Missouri and Illinois. In 1811–1812, it was responsible for the most violent series of earthquakes in the history of the continental United States (though there have been larger individual earthquakes). Scientists predict that another large earthquake is due which could inflict great damage to Arkansas as well as up to half the nation.

The New Madrid seismic zone runs roughly northeast from Marked Tree (Poinsett County). It generally follows Interstate 55 in a zigzag pattern through Blytheville (Mississippi County), crossing five state lines and cutting across the Mississippi River in three places.

In the winter of 1811–12, a series of powerful earthquakes rocked the Mississippi River Valley. The ground shook so violently that it rang church bells a thousand miles away in Boston. The area around the St. Francis River in northeast Arkansas was the center of the quakes, but since the largest settlement in the area, founded in 1789, was New Madrid, Missouri, with several hundred residents, the seismic zone was called the New Madrid Fault. That earthquake ranks as one of the TWENTY LARGEST IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Today, the New Madrid fault zone, which is active (continuing to move), holds the HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK IN NORTH AMERICA east of the Rocky Mountains. Because of its geologic structure based in sedimentary rock, the DAMAGE IT CAN CAUSE IS UP TO TWENTY TIMES GREATER THAN THOSE ON THE WEST COAST."

emphasis mine, but, you get it. In case anyone forgot, it's a pretty big deal. Probably the biggest.
