November 2019 Observations and Discussion

1991 I lived on Long Lake in New Brighton. Froze up earliest ever from info from New Brighton historical society. I nearly died ice fishing falling through. 18 yr kids do that. Now I know residual heat in the mud and lake bottom don't care how cold it is early. Takes time. Be careful if you venture out on the hard water before the New Year. It's just the way it is. Red Lake 2 years ago a couple died driving 4 Wheeler into open water, early December.

I have a few rules that I always follow:

- never be the first idiot on the ice

- always wear a whistle

- bring ice picks

Someone fell through the ice about 20 feet from shore while cross country skiing last January. The ice in the surrounding area was around 18 inches. Where he fell in the ice was only 5 inches. Gotta be prepared for disaster at all times.

Good info Grizz. Thanks for the post.

I remember that incident from two years ago. My heart just broke when it happened.  It was a young couple that lived around my area.  A friend of ours knew the male personally because he'd visit her restaurant establishment quite frequently. So sad. Never trust ice.  The lakes that are about 45 min. north of the twin cities have been frozen for a week now. Some guy decided to try fishing on one in Cambridge a couple days ago and obviously broke through.  I know ice fishing is fun and all, but have a little patience and give it more than a week!

On another note, I've been keeping records since 2017 of what the weather was like daily around our area.  As much as I don't recall this, we had a similar fall cold spell around this same time back in 2017.  The lows were almost as low as they are now.  The difference that I noticed was the daytime highs.  We've been about 5-7 degrees cooler than 2017's daily high.  Also, back in 2017 the lakes were already frozen over up north during this same time period as well.  I'm trying to even recall what 2017-2018's winter was like. I think it was more colder than anything, with the more significant snowfalls occurring after January.  I do know just like last year we had a late start to spring.  Just found this all interesting because while it seems odd for it to be this cold here for this time of year right now, it was actually very similar two years ago!

There were some cold days, what I remember about Nov 2017 more than the temps is the snow.  By the days leading up to Thanksgiving my backyard had a solid 8-10 inch snow depth.  Then Thanksgiving and following days brought 40s and rain melting all of it!

I'll be honest, I'm wishing we had snow right now. Feeling a little envious of all those who are getting the snow :P  I guess it gives me a little more time to get some things done around the yard still. The time will eventually come!

All valid points. But, snow that falls in Oct/Nov melts. We’ll get our snow when we should get snow, and it’ll stick around for the winter based on the long term outlooks. Hang in there. We’ll get ours soon enough!

Cedar Rapids set a new record low and record low high temperature today. This morning, we set a new record low of -6, beating the old record of 6 set back in 1986. This afternoon, we set a new record low high temperature of 13 beating the old record of 19 set back in 1940.

I'd say that is true for anyone south of US Highway 2. My personal expectation is mid November I expect snow to stay. That's when my average high drops below 32, if it's melting after that my high temp is above average.

NWS has dropped my morning low from 5F to 2F. Oh well, at least it will be a calm 2F. Nothing worse than a windy 2F

At least y'all are getting your ground properly chilled so you won't be watching your new snow disappear from beneath. A major draw-back to premature snows, especially in the warmth of the city where I live. One funny thing tho, the city snow plow also plowed about 2 foot of my neighbor's leafs back into her front yard. She was busy Sunday afternoon putting them all in the street against the directive not to do so, lol.

Yeah for sure. We live in the same state but the climate is a bit different. Average high temp below 32 here isn't until the first week of December. In fact, it looks like December, January and February are the only months with average highs below 32F. I'm sure your winters are at least a month or so longer than here....which is a long time. I moved here from Chicago back in 2013 and I can honestly say the winters here are noticeably different. Sure Chicago gets snow, cold, etc.  But winters here seem to linger. It hasn't been a shock to the system, but it has been an adjustment for me.

Don't get me wrong....if it was snowing here like it has been in your area and others I would be loving it. But, it's not. That has advantages like you pointed out. The ground here has gotten rock hard. Not sure about soil temps, but I would guess the top 2 inches are frozen. Take the good with the bad. As for your neighbor.....karma is a fickle b*tch  :P

It's been a fascinating stretch of weather across most of our Sub over the past couple of weeks. The LR call of a historic stretch has been verified by many of us on here. Not only did we set records for snow but the cold has been whicked . Interestingly, we have seen back-to-back Novembers that will be remembered and this month isn't done just yet. Blocking is going to get things rocking around Thanksgiving week. I'll provide some LR ideas later this morning.

Chicago broke daily record low's on both the 11th & 12th, but what was noteworthy is the record low of +7F yesterday which was the coldest temp ever recorded so early in the season. #Historic

Good Morning!  With a H/L of 24/16 Grand Rapids did set a new record for the coldest maximum for November 12th While the low of 16 fell just short of the record of 15° set in 1986 and 1911 it did tie 1976 for 2nd coldest low. It looks like the overnight low at the airport was 15 and here at my house the overnight low was 16. For today the average H/L at Grand Rapids is 49/34 the record high is 70 set in 1989 and the record low is 10 set in 1986. The record snow fall for today is 3.2” set in 1959. Last year the H/L was 30/24  At this time I have cloudy skies and a temperature of 18

Cold 44 hour stretch by even winter's standards.

Sub freezing high in November is pretty darn impressive as well.

What an amazing November so far! Still have crusty ice and sleet masses in my curled up leaves. This has to be the fastest I have ever remembered seeing such radical changes in 4 weeks.

Marshall only hit 8F before cloud deck moved in. Was a balmy 11F when I went out to start my car. New battery meant zero issues, unlike several of my co-workers these past 2 days. KJXN bottomed at 4F as clouds got over here a bit later than at home. Ok, well this historic bout was FUN. Seems strange that we should be around 50F for a high since it looks and feels like mid-January. A bonus was a beautiful sunrise with red skies over the snow covered fields!

The clouds rolled in much earlier here and the temperatures stay in the mid and upper teens all night.

Lake Michigan and its clouds kept west Michigan much warmer then areas to our east as lows here were mostly in the mid to upper teens off to our east they fell below 10 and even below zero at several locations. In SE Michigan a low of -6 was reported at Ann Arbor and it was down to at least +1 at Flint. Most locations is SE Michigan were below +10.

Beautiful Cold Clear Morning.

Low of 21* expecting a High in the mid 30's.

We get to return quickly to more normal temps and weather while our Northern neighbors have record cold and snow. Central and Southern Texas has a rare and early snow two days in a row.

It's going to be an interesting winter.

The GFS has storm after storm dropping out of the west and forming over the Central Plains.  What a pattern this would be leading up to Thanksgiving week.  I was telling my kids of a blizzard that hit here 2 days after Thanksgiving of 1983 when I was a kid. We were stranded at my grandparent's farm for several days.  We had 3 snow days the next week as clean up efforts were slow.  Around here the winter of 1983-1984 was amazing with many storms/blizzards and the record breaking cold spell around Christmas.
