SilverFallsAndrew
These are the top 10 coldest January airmasses at the 850mb level over Salem, OR. The numbers below represent the peak of the airmass. These are not the 10 coldest 850mb readings on record, but the top 10 coldest distinct airmasses in that time. ,For instance the top 3 coldest 850mb temps at SLE in January were with the same airmass on consecutive days. Listed below is the coldest point of that outbreak. There are only 4 readings since 1980 that make the top 50.... 1955-1980: 461981-present: 4 (1982, 2007, 2012, 2017). Front Ranger
Doesn't get more IMBY than this. Or subjective...picking one month. But it's still irrefutable proof that top tier cold just can't happen in the PNW anymore. Take it away, Phil. 1 Quote A forum for the end of the world. Phil
If SLE breaks the January record this year, Justin owes all of us $100. BLI snowman
If SLE breaks the January record this year, Justin owes all of us $100. Unfortunately SLE's record there doesn't include the mega cold dome that was over us on 1/31/1950

And yeah, I am going to start close to home when sifting through 1456 pages of data, and start with the first month of the year. I posted quite extensively about other events in the November thread. Guest CulverJosh
It is where they do the soundings.I know. I remember Jack Capell always mentioned the weather balloon in Salem. My first memory of that would be 1981 or 1982.
