January 850mb temps at SLE

These are the top 10 coldest January airmasses at the 850mb level over Salem, OR. The numbers below represent the peak of the airmass. These are not the 10 coldest 850mb readings on record, but the top 10 coldest distinct airmasses in that time. ,For instance the top 3 coldest 850mb temps at SLE in January were with the same airmass on consecutive days. Listed below is the coldest point of that outbreak. There are only 4 readings since 1980 that make the top 50....

 

1955-1980: 46

1981-present: 4 (1982, 2007, 2012, 2017). 

 

I have also listed the high/low at SLE on that day.

Doesn't get more IMBY than this. ;) Or subjective...picking one month. But it's still irrefutable proof that top tier cold just can't happen in the PNW anymore.

It was just data that was interesting. And yeah, I am going to start close to home when sifting through 1456 pages of data, and start with the first month of the year. I posted quite extensively about other events in the November thread.

1. 18.8 on 1/16/2009

2. 18.0 on 1/26/2015

3. 16.8 on 1/7/2003

4. 16.8 on 1/18/2003

5. 16.2 on 1/17/2014

6. 15.8 on 1/30/1962 (big reversal from the week before)

7. 15.3 on 1/24/1968 (insane retrograde, arctic air followed right after)

8. 15.1 on 1/21/1961

9. 15.0 on 1/14/2018

10. 15.0 on 1/15/1965

 

All are from the 1960s or the 21st century.
