March 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

It’s cold in my back yard in the shade but exposed to the wind. Baileys and hot chocolate type of cold. Doesn’t make me think of cold beer. It is warm in the sun though. We went to the local nursery and bought some plants today.

Conflicting reports!!!

Really impressive to see Bend only at 21 as of 3pm. Looks like low 50s from Salem south. Should be cold tonight though. 40 up here so far today. Pretty breezy too so some cross Cascade gradients.

Our main yard is totally protected from a north and east wind and all faces south... including our decks. It was unintentional... but it is absolutely perfect during the warm season and on nice days in the cold season.

If it was windy here today... it would be very different.

Looks like a generally cold pattern for the foreseeable future.  Maybe will settle into a 1950s type regime.

The 12Z ECMWF showed warmer than normal 850mb temps over WA for the next 10 days.

That is actually not noteworthy. Unless its raining or snowing... he is wearing shorts and if the sun is shining then he is barefoot. Same mindset as Chris.

Having him work around the yard willingly... that is very noteworthy.

Bit chilly on the legs golfing, but was nice to be outside!!

I bet it was on the open golf course... but you got a decent amount of natural vitamin D. That is really important right now.

No doubt the ubiquitous high pressure being progged over the NE Pacific and GOA for the next two weeks will plunge the PDO.  It has already fallen a bunch and should continue to do so.  Certainly increases the chances for a 2011 type summer!  Could be a very dry / cool summer coming up.

2011 was quite lovely once it got going... 2012 was complete perfection from July-Sept.

Although I am not convinced we follow either.

Just saw posts about Rattlesnake Lake park and hiking trail being packed today... I guess parking lots were all full with cars parked down the sides of the road for a mile back.

At face value I would say the 18z GFS would provide freezing low temps at least 10 of the next 16 days for many places and maybe a dozen.  Really decent looking pattern if you like a lot of days with at least some sunshine and lot of clear / cold nights.

ECMWF and EPS are the way to go when they agree. Obviously clear nights will be chilly in March even with a warm air mass. Actually in any dry pattern.

Just about the most boring possible outcome. No thunderstorms, just monotonous morning clouds and afternoon sun for four months on end. No thanks.

I know our climate isn't very good at creating thunderstorms but it's much better to have a few than none.

Last summer was pretty nice. Was good having lots of 70s and low 80s and a lot of thunderstorm activity.

High of only 23 in Redmond. Impressive.

It appears this breaks the record min/max for the day by 13 degrees.

Until last year this would have also tied the lowest high temperature on record in March, but they had a high of 21 last March.

Took a beautiful drive out the Gorge today. The roads seemed unusually quiet and traffic at the trailheads was light, especially for a sunny Sunday in mid March.

That could be partially due to the virus but also the fact that winds were gusting 40-50mph with temps in the 30s. There was a good deal of ice on the waterfalls. One of the latest times I can remember seeing that.

Surprised to see so many snow patches left around Clark County today. The low dewpoints undoubtedly helped.

Also noticing a fair amount of limb damage to the blossoming trees here from the snow. Even 2-3" of wet snow can be very destructive on any foliage.

Noticed the same thing. Some neighborhoods directly to the west of I-205 near Mill Plain still had north facing lawns half covered with snow late this afternoon as we were coming back into town.

Our little piles from the sidewalk being shoveled have survived another day as well.

I would probably have to bet on the GFS in this case because chilly weekends has been the rule lately.
