You really can't assume current death rates will be accurate either though. Many of the people in Germany who tested positive just tested positive in the last few days. A certain number of them will die in the future but are currently artificially lowering the death rate. The real number is probably between 1 and 1.5 percent, but there is literally no way to know yet this early on the outbreak.

And offsetting that is the fact that even in Germany there are still probably lots of undetected cases considering the country has 82 million people.

And offset on the positive side that Germany has an excellent healthcare system that has not yet been overwhelmed.

There's really too many factors and u knowns at this point to nail down a death rate I think.

It's hard to believe this is real. We are discussing death numbers like it's the gfs or the euro and these are people. What a nightmare.

Germany is the best gauge for the truth death rate and its probably under 1%.

BERLIN — Germany's relatively low rate of deaths so far from coronavirus is largely due to the high number of tests being carried out in the country, meaning authorities are simply aware of more cases, including milder ones, a senior virologist said.

Speaking at the launch of a government-backed alliance to promote research into the virus, Christian Drosten - a Berlin research virologist - said on Thursday that Germany was carrying out "extremely high numbers" of tests, averaging around 500,000 a week.

Except the death rate there continues to slowly rise. They just caught a lot more cases earlier.

No one who's been studying this thinks it's under 1% at this point. Except Trump!

Its conceivable that it could be under 1% if every case was known.

With that in mind the recovery rate in Germany also continues to rise. Sounds like Germany has also done extensive testing: https://www.npr.org/...other-countries. Currently 6658 recovered vs 351 dead, much better than other countries at the same point in the crisis. Even so that still amounts to a 5% death rate. There are now strong indications in China that the virus was much worse than officially reported: http://www.asianews....bers-49673.html

I'm lucky that I have an essential job because one of the things the company I work for makes is medical equipment.  I must admit part of me wouldn't have minded an unexpected week off, but some people might have to go several weeks which would be a bit much.  My wife works at a high school so she is getting paid time off.  We are lucky.

I hate to say it, but I highly doubt the ashes people are collecting are of their loved ones.  It seems unlikely they would have cared enough to keep track of all that.  They are probably collecting ashes from a combination of a large number of victims.  People in this country have a hard time comprehending how brutal dictatorships operate.

Thanks DeBlasio, for urging New Yorkers to “go out and enjoy life despite the virus” just before it got bad. He literally said that and tweeted it. Even recommended particular movies/plays for people to see. Very Trumpian rhetoric.

They did not do a full lock down the entire country until March 21st.

On 21 March, Conte announced a further enlargement of the lockdown, by shutting down all non-necessary businesses and industries.[32] This measure came after a rise in the number of cases and deaths in the previous days, and after multiple institutions – including trade unions, mayors, and regional presidents – asked for a generalised shutdown of the Italian production system.

I think we may be in better shape to weather the second wave that is likely as the NY outbreak spreads.  WA getting hit very early in the game put us a bit ahead of the curve compared to most states.

The Navy hospital ship just left Virginia enroute to New York.  I really didn't think it would get this bad.

Going to get worse before it gets better. This new 15min test is going to really give us an idea on numbers infected.

This country is going to have to look long and hard at balancing the safety of the people and the health of the economy.  We will be devastated economically if things stay this restrictive for more than a few weeks.  We may have to look at allowing people in low risk groups to go about their lives while higher risk groups are strictly quarantined.  The one draw back to keeping things so locked down is the spread will take forever to play out instead of rapidly exploding and being done with.  There are no easy answers here.

Its pretty much over there either way... even if they just let people die in their homes back in January and February.
