June 2020 Observations and Discussion

The storms have lost southward momentum and the south edge is weakening and becoming bubbly.  Lightning has decreased.

The line totally crapped out as it approached Cedar Rapids.  I was lucky just to get 0.20".  There was no thunder at all.

There is a new line forming to the west and wsw, but I have a bad feeling the cells along I-80 will dominate and pass to my south while anything north of the cells craps out.

I pretty much got hosed again.  The first line crapped out before sinking into Cedar Rapids.  The second line mostly missed south.  The closest personal weather station says about 0.40".  Stations only 1-2 miles south of me got hit by red and picked up a quick inch.  It's just not my year.

These storms finally joined together and filled in kind of like I thought it could. Really lame here though with only 0.40” on my digital station and the maximum rainfall rate didn’t even reach 2” per hour briefly. The heavy stuff was only a few miles south.

Currently it is clear and 63 here. The overnight low was 59 that means that the AC did not have to do any work overnight. The official high at Grand Rapids yesterday was a pleasant 84. With a nice breeze and some clouds. Talking about the clouds with 61% of possible sunshine yesterday was the cloudiest day since June 11th (note the average amount of possible sunshine in June here at Grand Rapids is 62%) But since June 11th Grand Rapids has had a whopping 96% of possible sunshine. That includes 3 days at 100% 3 days at 99% 1 day at 97% 1 day at 96%. I guess you could say we have dried out nicely in the last 10 days.

Boy, after the second line moved out and I finally went to bed, the rain really filled back in, with some heavy downpours mixed in.  All of Cedar Rapids is well over an inch, with a few spots approaching 2 inches, particularly just south of me where the second line hit.  The station closest to me has about 1.3".

I picked up a whopping 0.01 of rainfall this morning from some passing sprinkles and light showers... CR doesn't have anything on Omaha right now when it comes to getting missed with storms and heavy rainfall  B), ugh.

Thanks to this, I think we are now looking at drought conditions developing in East Central Nebraska in the next few weeks if things don't change.

I hate to continue to beat a dead horse, however we are now looking at seeing drought conditions in East Central Nebraska developing in the next few weeks if things don't change.

Overall, you are correct.  However, Lincoln did get clobbered by a severe line a week or so ago.  I'm way ahead of you with rain, but I'm still waiting for the first good thunderstorm of the year.  The only storm that could qualify is the one back in April when I got some decent hail, but that was brief and had very little rain.

Very true, I had to delete Lincoln from that post LOL... I am glad to see you all in Eastern Iowa scoring some good rain and storms this morning... just can't figure out why we keep getting skipped.

Hoping maybe we can score a strong thunderstorm this afternoon, however not too overly optimistic about that happening.

I'm only at .66" and it appears to be a dud for my area today. Storms going all forenoon to the west and now it's dying down or missing to the nw. It's lush and green around here and farmers love moderate rains, but always being on the edge of better things is getting me on edge. Lol. Let's just get this system over with and start over later this week and hope for something better, but I've got a wedding to participate in on Friday, so I'm hoping for nice weather. Probably will be a heavy storm instead as some are possible.

It appears much of this afternoon's rain will lift north of Cedar Rapids as well.

Man there's quite a bit of flash flooding going on in Tama and Benton county area and wherever some huge rains fell. Glad I don't live in a flood prone area!

New cells are starting to fire in se. Iowa but the bulk or all of it should pass to the south.

The final band of heavy rain broadened out and pushed across the entire metro area.  My total is now up to 2.36".  As nice as that is, it's actually one of the lowest totals in Cedar Rapids.  A few miles to my south over 3 inches has fallen.

Another miss, this time missing a thunderstorm with heavy downpours by a just a couple miles to the southwest. Mother Nature is doing us absolutely no favors in Omaha... however it is what it is. Enjoying the sound of distant thunder and watching a few sprinkles falling on the dry ground.

Lincoln getting hit with a decent severe warned cell, any posters down that way see any decent wind or hail?

Looks like another southern Lancaster special. Some heavy rain and wind in north Lincoln.

Rise 'N Grind....another beautiful sunrise here in the Valley of the Sun...clear skies, calm winds but warm temps (75F locally) as we scorch to near 110F in PHX over the next couple days.  I've been skimming through some local reports from last nights heavy rains, hail and severe storms back home.  Some spots got up to 3" of rain and my place had a severe warned storm cell that raced through dumping a decent amount of rain along with strong winds.  There was a hail core that tracked right over town that indicated 1-2" hail based on radar but thankfully nothing fell according to my neighbors.

I took advantage of the unusually beautiful late June day with no school or work. I went over to the Hitchcock Nature Area in western IA. The Loess hills are super underrated and pretty, it was a great day. Yellowstone it ain't, but it's nice getaway when you only have one day to kill. Oh and also, Dean Wysocki was fired from LKN....so there's that.

They need to be transparent about why. Really not a good look for KLKN right now.

Edit: WOW look at the comments on his last Facebook post. That may have something to do with it. I was afraid of it being cancel culture BS, but it doesn't look like it.

I'm starting to pay more attention to the weather pattern around July 2nd as that is when we are planning our road trip back to Chicago.  Phase 4 opening is looking likely this Friday which is great timing.  The models are trending in the right direction and keeping it rather tranquil down through the TX/OK panhandle region and up through the Ozarks.  The blocking HP across Hudson Bay later next week may be strong enough to block any sort of organized storm action into the big 4th of July holiday for a lot of us on this board.  Warm and Sunny holiday weekend???  Sign me up!

What a gorgeous beautiful day today. Plenty of sunshine and crisp cool air w temps in the 50s. Highs expected to be in the 70s.

Looks like Covid cases are exploding in the south because morons are not being smart. Noway I am going south anytime soon, especially areas such as TX,, FL, Arizona, LA just to name a few. Anyone down there, wish them plenty of luck!

Friday evening is looking pretty good for a line of storms from Iowa through Michigan.

After that, models are trying to cut off another upper low over the east and block up the pattern again.
