June (July) 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Looks similar to 2010 when most of the nation had record heat and half the days of summer in Oceanside set record low maximums. Sea surface temperatures stayed springlike all summer, and San Diego actually averaged below 70 for the high in July. However, Downtown L.A. set its record highest temperature in history of 113 F on September 27 that year. Then on November 4, San Diego reached 100 degrees, whicb was the hottest day of the year and first time to reach triple digits in nearly 20 years.

A fun game to play is to list all the record highs for any coastal California station from lowest to highest, and then guessing what months they’re in. No cheating by looking at the Wiki page! Works in both SoCal and NorCal.

The winter of 1979-80 has always been fascinating to me. I'm not quite sure how good the rest of the season was, the but the storm in January that dropped feet upon feet of snow over NW Oregon I think made that entire season (at least north of Salem, that is). Interesting storm-- I believe total singe storm snowfall was somewhere near an absurd 75 inches for Hood River.

Yeah 79-80 was pretty boring down this way by historical standards. Some cold temps at a few points but no snow.

Springfield, Oregon regular season 2023-24 Stats:

2016-17 was definitely the best winter of the 21st century in the Salem area.

I work in probably the worst spot for snow in Salem, there was probably about 12-15” that winter, in that location. The 12/14 and 1/7 events were pretty significant. Most of the Salem area also had 1-2” of snow the first couple days of January. Minor accumulations in early December, late February, and early March.

December 2016 was a low key almost great month. Very cold east side that month too. I think in 5-10 years we will view it more favorably in its true historical context.

Historically January 2017 does not stack up with the big boys of our pre-1980 climate. However, when recency bias is applied it looks pretty amazing.

December 2016 didn’t have the arctic blasts like December 2008 or 2013, but going back through our period of record it was one of the more consistently cool December’s we have seen. Managing to be a top 10 cold December in much of the Willamette Valley without a major fake cold pattern or major arctic blast.

Mostly cloudy and 61 after a low of 56.

The last few GFS runs are fairly convinced it’s going to get pretty warm for awhile starting later next week.

Then again, we’ve talking about July 15-25 for awhile now, as a period with a (relatively) warm-favorable intraseasonal state. But much like the others this year, it looks transient. At least in my opinion.

July 2016 had something similar. It was 70s and 80s all month except at the end there were two days that hit 94 at PDX. I assume that was because of a similar intraseasonal cycle.

Yeah, quite similar. Though some of the things the GFS is doing upstream look suspiciously...GFSey. I don’t know.

At 1600’ I believe our first freeze was the 3rd. Then we had a fairly significant snow event on the 4th.

December 2016 was a fun month. It snowed here on the 8th and again on the 14th. I remember one of those two events being a few inches deep here, we did better than PDX. Then I went to Sunriver around Christmas which is the only time I have ever seen subzero temperatures.

During the January 4-7 southern OR / northern CA special it got to -13 at Sunriver, -23 at Fort Rock, and -28 at Silver Lake with highs in the single digits at each of those places. The cold really intensified once you got south of Deschutes County. Klamath Marsh also got to -25.

Yup, EUG had several inches on the Jan 4 event with a high of just 29F. Then another 31F for a high on Jan 14, 2017. That's the most recent sub-freezing high EUG has experienced. The closest we have come is 34F...on Nov 30, 2019 (the only sub-40F high for the entire cold weather season). If we get to Jan 21 without one, it will be the longest streak with no sub-freezing high in the record books.

Euro definitely taking a cooler route than the GFS later next week. Still very pleasant though.

Meanwhile, the marine layer has already burned off here. Bright sunshine and 70 degrees. Should have no trouble hitting our first 80 of the month today.

16-17 was pretty fun up here as well. December 2016 had 3.0” of snow...12 sub 40 high temps and an avg. temp of 38. Didn’t have any measurable snowfall in January 2017 although it did snow a couple times. There were 11 sub 40 days and an avg. temp of 37. First 1/3 of February was interesting as well....5.0” of snow and another 4 sub 40 days.

Never actually had one sub freezing high temp that winter which was interesting. Had a few days 33-35 though. Lots of lows in the low to mid 20s. 8.0” snow total. Avg. winter temp is the coldest I’ve recorded in my lifetime just barely colder than 08-09.

Warm season rainfall-11.14”

Max temp-88

My brother was living in The Dalles during the winter of 2016-17, December and January were epic out that way.

PDX recently updated their top 5 warmest/coldest months/seasons/years chart, through January 2020.

https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pqr/pdxclimate/pg44.pdf

It looks like 2016-17 was their 5th coldest “deep winter” (December 15-February 10) period on record, with an average temp of just 35.2 in that stretch.

That year also featured their 5th lowest average max for Astronomical Winter on record, with an average high of just 45 for the entire December 21-March 20 period.

It’s a period that definitely seems to be slightly underrated on this forum. Even though it obviously didn’t roll with the big dawgs like 1955-56 in terms of extremes, the extended chillyness was consistent on an historically significant level.

Looks like we’re on our way to 70 degrees for just the 3rd time this month. Really hoping we can keep the temperatures in the 65-85 degree range through the whole summer like last year. Only 2 85+ days last year (91 on 6/12, 87 on 7/21).

If we are talking about the Western lowlands I think PDX was a bit of an anomaly due to the outflow period following the January 10th event.

That being said, I do agree we, including myself, underrated it at the time. I think that had to do with the general lack of widespread snow north of Portland (outside of the February event), and no regional arctic outbreaks. From a sustained cold perspective it is hard to find many years that are similar. We went through pretty much an entire winter with no real torching.

I think if it was some winter from the 1920s we were looking at objectively we would rate it much higher than we do now. Especially when we factor in how sustained the cold on the east side was.

I think February/March 2019 is a period that will endure too. Though it is hard to say that period is underrated on here, it was pretty special.

At Silver Falls, February 2019 was the coldest on record, and recorded the first sub 20 low in March in nearly 50 years.
