April 13-14th Spring Storm System

Geos

Recommended Posts

Finally NE is getting some much needed moisture, its been a long time coming.  Hopefully that helps the farmers out there.  Wondering if the grass turns green bc of the Spring snows.

Best thing for it; I just laid down some fertilizer too which will really help. I ended up with 3" of snow and .3" of rain and should be right around an inch of liquid which should help. There were numerous wrecks in my area, wasn't as bad as last weeks ride home in the snow but by know means a picnic!

The NAM says non event west of the lake, but the GFS says a dusting. So will see who's right.

6" is pretty impressive for April. Usually those kinds of heavy rainfall events are reserved during the summer - a product of training t-storms.

Folks.....very happy to say that a snow event is headed my way tonight and into tomorrow morning, which will break the all time snowiest winter ever in the Detroit metro area and my area too. Im currently at 91.3" and the record is 93.5". My forecast is calling for 2-4inches tonight with snowfall rates an inch an hour accompanied by thunder as well. Wow...who would have known that on April 14th and 15th, my snowfall record will break. Thats why its "Never over until its over".

This from Noaa:

COULD CERTAINLY SEE SNOWFALL RATES ON THE ORDER OF
AN INCH PER HOUR ACCOMPANIED BY THUNDER ON A LOCAL BASIS. FOLLOWED
AN ARW/NMM BLEND FOR QPF AMOUNTS DUE TO GENERAL CONSENSUS WITH
LARGER SCALE MODELS AND THEIR SIMILAR HANDING OF FINE SCALE
FEATURES, PARTICULARLY INVOF THE METROPOLITIAN AREA. THE FORECAST IN
ITS CURRENT FORM CALLS FOR BREAKING THE ALL-TIME RECORDS FOR
SNOWIEST WINTER SEASON AT BOTH DETROIT AND FLINT (SEE CLIMATE
SECTION).

Facebook: NWS LOT calling for a dusting on the grass. -SN here in Racine, but the flakes are tiny. Almost looks like mist.

Snow bands starting to strengthen and fill in...should be coming down at a good clip in McHenry/Lake counties...

I can vouch for that. It's coming down at a decent clip over here. This is what I really love about Meteorology. Saturday I measured 1 inch diameter hail in my backyard. Then I played basketball in near 80 degree weather. Now it's 35 degrees and snowing.

Grass is white here, but that's about the only surface cold enough - except the trees. Just a tad above 0°C

Will post pics later.

Saturday late afternoon, I experienced one heck of a fierce T'stm too. The winds must have gusted at least 90mph and sustained at 60mph. Hail was penny size, maybe a tad larger. My area was so white, it looked like it had snowed. I picked up 0.5" of hail. A severe T'stm indeed. Power outages were all over my area and I did not have power for 2 days. My wife and I were with candles throughout the entire ordeal. For a minute, I thought it was a tornado, so I told my wife to run downstairs in the basement. I wanted to stay a little bit more and watch the action from my bay window. It was a scary scene.

Does anybody know why the winds from Saturdays T'stm in my area went from suddenly blowing in opposite directions in a matter of maybe couple of minutes? It was very weird. Thats when I thought it could have been a tornado. I.E, winds were blowing from east to west and then went from west to east.

Geo's, there is your wet snows you like to see.  2nd of the season...

First one it was too windy for it to stick on the trees.

Wow... it doesn't look like it, but I tagged 2.0" here.

Made 80" for the season!
