Winter 14-15 Alaska/Yukon/Upper BC Discussion

Figured I'd start a thread for up here because the PNW thread gets flooded very quickly.

Been a dry last couple days up here featuring a pretty strong inversion. Snow level has been sitting pretty high in Juneau, hope to change that next week. We shall see... In the meantime we're sitting pretty good for Aurora viewing conditions!

Here is a photo from last night in front of the Mendenhall Glacier:

Since this area covers both the US and Canada, here are some conversion tables from metric to imperial units and such for easy lookup.

Yeah, we were lucky that the weather is so good. We get a lot of good chances to see the aurora but it's usually too cloudy. I've heard that the chances are going to be even better tonight to see it. People as far south as Prince of Whales island (closer to Seattle than Juneau) saw some last night as well.

Some more aurora action last night. Got to see them dance. It was just mostly green, but the shimmering/dancing last night was insane. Very active!

Now the clouds have rolled in. Looks like rain...

Here is a photo I saw on facebook from last night.

No problem.

Cloudy today. Rain starting tomorrow sometime, probably late. Snow level going to start super high at ~5,000 and probably stay that way for a day or two. Looks like the mountains should start getting plenty of snow later this week.

The rain should be good in the long run, though. It will hopefully clear out the hoar frost that can make for bad avalanche conditions once a bunch of snow buries it...

The Euro looks wet for the next 6 days.  Are there any good webcams around there showing the weather?

http://avcams.faa.gov/

my favorite FAA one is the cape spencer web cam. i commercial fish around there in the summer. when the winter and fall storms roll through you can see the big ocean swell. reminds me why i don't want to go out there in the winter haha

^cape spencer on an uncommon non-rainy non-cloudy summer day. a couple boats had quit fishing early and we went in to pick strawberries. it was a good berry year this summer.

my favorite (i can see this glacier from my back yard)

keeping track of winds and such for avalanche conditions later.

looks like the snow level is dropping down to ~1500 feet here. gonna make some good mountain snow, i hope. winds up high look to be having an south + easterly kick to them. exclusively easterly at eaglecrest. GFS meteostar showing NE winds in the higher levels.

Hi everybody :)!

I am Philippe and live in Whitehorse, Yukon.

I am very happy to have discovered this forum, because I think it was missing. I come from France and I settled in the territory 5 1/2 years ago and still report our climate and weather conditions in a French forum :)! I am then glad to do the same here and will try to share with you weather conditions and events in the Yukon!

So far this winter season has been very mild in the territory. However this morning, Old Crow has been the cold spot in Canada with -39C.

The coldest temp at my station has been -17C a week ago. We are however anticipating a drop in the temperatures with maybe with first -20C. That's never too late because rivers and lakes are not completely frozen or it is too thin to use them.

I also have a weather station, feel free to visit!

Here are some pictures from the past days:

The Takhini River, just behind my home. This was this morning while going for a run:

Talk to you later :)!

Hello Philippe! Right on! It's so good to see someone a little close by.

Hope to make it up to the Chilkat Pass area to do some snowmachining soon if it does not start to snow down here!

That is a bummer to hear, I thought all this rain we've been getting would be reaching you guys as snow. It's been warm and wet here, unfortunately .  Looks like things are going to cool down a bit in the next couple days. The long range of all the models looks pretty promising but I've had my heart broken so many times.

Snow level 1300 feet. We start cooling off on Thursday with daytime temps in the upper 20's. Winds up high are southeast with it switching easterly on wednesday.

Had some snow/rain mix today. Hope we can get a little snow action down low before it clears up.

Hi everybody,

No change here: overcast (or mainly cloudy), low amplitude (in the -11/-15 range), light snow showers.... I miss the sun and colder temperatures.

Anyway at least I have the opportunity to keep on running at 6:00 am without challenging difficulties.

About the forecast, some light snow this evening, and "it should" clear up tomorrow during the day. I wrote should, while it has been days that models have blue sky in the their forecast, but it seems to be a moving target :)! I am waiting for my first -25/-30C of the season.

This is awesome. It's in the negative teens and you miss the cold weather. You certainly live in the right place!

Looking forward to hearing more of your updates as the winter goes along.

Yes I confirm that it is one of the reason I decided to settle here.

And today I got my first -20C of the season, to celebrate this event I did two runs today :)!

Here are some pictures I took during my runs:

I really enjoy running when the air is crispy and the nature frozen!

For upcoming days it should warm up a bit with some episodes of light snow. But tomorrow morning, we may get -30C at my place.

Rain today. Snow level ~1k. Starting to clear up and cool down again. Might get some snow on Saturday before it warms up and the snow level jumps up to 6000 feet for a day (hopefully less!).

Yeah, it's pretty warm down here. Snow level is at about 4k feet right now. Looks to cool down a little bit but still stay a bit mild... About 40 degrees outside.

Still mild here. After a short break on Friday and Saturday, wind from southeast is blowing up again and we got -1.4C this afternoon.

Here are two pictures I took yesterday in Whitehorse, along the Yukon River:

I'd like to visit someplace like that in the winter.  Just visit though...too cold and dark for me on a full time basis.

The drive from the lower 48 to Anchorage in winter is pretty surreal, almost like traveling on Hoth or something.
