April 2015 Observations and Discussion

Monday and Tuesday have been big ol' duds over here.  Now it's up to Wednesday night to deliver and salvage something from the non-existent week of rain the models had been predicting.  It appears areas to my east will have a better shot at any severe weather Thursday.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

Been socked in with fog and drizzle all morning. Near 40° currently.

Lake temps almost entirely in the 30s still.

I was expecting more storms so far this week but it's been pretty lame so far.

No kidding.  It appears we may only get one shot of rain this entire week, late tonight into Thursday morning.

Temperature and fog has gone no where today. Yeah rainfall has under-performed around here too in a big way.

Heavy snow in Central Nebraska (Holdrege).  Sounds like places north of I-80 have snow covering the ground.  Have seen twitter pictures of snow covered cars.  Great for moisture, just wish it would have happened during the winter.  We have mainly been stuck in the the 30's and 40' this whole week with dreary, cloudy, misty weather.  Had some nice amounts of light rain, now heavy snow.

I guess we won't worry about severe weather here.  Supposed to be back in the 60's tomorrow so the track meet will go on.  Soccer games have been postponed due to the snow.

Snow has now ended, back to rain.  Fun while it lasted.  Let's hope for more of this next winter.

We have fat snowflakes and it's just pouring snow out there! We might get a coating of snow before all is said and done. We will take the precip any way we can get it!

You are right, we have to take the moisture in any form.  Heard a person complaining about the snow and I mentioned as dry as we have been it is good to see puddles outside and heavy, wet snow falling.  It is not accumulating so it won't cause any travel issues since the temp is hovering around 35 degrees.

I finally got lucky and had a very thin line of heavy storms train over me late this afternoon.  I ended up with 1.25 inches of rain, nearly doubling my precip total from the last 2+ months.  There wasn't much lightning, but there were a couple nice cracks.  It was nice to see some hail.

Around here winds have turned back NE and fog has been rolling in. Down in the upper 40s now.

1.98" of rain today though. Biggest soaker of the year.

For a while the models had been showing some nice troughs digging into the west with a couple widespread heavier rain/storm events for our region, but they've shifted to a more progressive northern-stream-dominant flow that's not looking as warm next week and not warm at all toward day ten as the flow turns northwesterly.

That NW flow looks transient, though.

Had a pretty good rain and hail shower here in Racine at 3pm. Threatening to do it all over it again now.

Never seen hail two days in a row before.

Came back from New York City after staying there for more than a week and I must say, it was cloudy, misty and cold there. Highs were in the 40s and lows in the 30s. There was one day only when temps were in the low 60s with sunshine. Today, its gorgeous there, plenty of sunshine, as the Greek Orthodox Easter celebrates, cooking that delicious Lam outside. Yum! :D

68° for a high here today, then some clouds and sprinkles moved in after 3pm.

Starting to see shrubs push out green leaves in the wooded areas now.

Do you think it would be a good idea to have my lawn cut late this week?  Is the grass starting to grow fast?  I heard from my neighbor that it would be a good idea to think about having my guys come out to my house and do some Spring cleaning towards the end of the week.

Went out to Lake Havasu this past weekend and had a blast.  So many cigarette boats out here.  Temps were in the upper 80's/low 90's with full sun.  I don't know how these ppl can booze all day in the sun without having heat stroke!  The Spring breakers had left, but there were tons of boaters that came from all over CA/AZ/NV to show off their expensive yachts/power boats for the boat show.

It's depressing looking at the Euro Ensembles that are developing a cool pool right smack dap in the middle of the nation Day 8-15.  Definitely not a happy camper as I will be heading back at this time.

Idk, this April has been pretty D**n nice so far. I don't care if we cool to slightly below average for a few days, will warm right back up anyway.

Depends on your perspective.  Yes, Chicago has had a pleasant April for their standards.  I'm coming from summer time weather to days that may potentially be in the upper 40's/low 50's for a few days and that would be a shock to the system.,..not to mention depressing.  think my blood has thinned since being out here!

Impressive to see SE Canada still under 2-10 Feet of snow at this time of year.  This was there year for snow given the -AMO signature this winter season.

High of 65° today at my place. 0.23" of rain this morning puts the yearly total at 7.01" now. Pretty much doubled the yearly precipitation total in the last 5 days.

Tomorrow looks a bit cooler with the lake breeze.

Thats exactly what I said when 2 years ago, summer of 2013, I went to a similar "Boat Party" and those people there started to booze from late morning till well into the evening. They were in the water drinking, swimming, most, if not all drunk. That was my first time experiencing it and I hated it. Never done it again. I went only because my wife's brother invited me to go. If I knew it was gonna be that boring, I would have never gone. Also, the water is kind of disgusting looking, knowing people are standing in it, kneewise height. It was a bad experience for me. Never again!

After a very nice week overall in Chicago and region wide, the CFSv2/GFS/EURO are all lining up towards the LRC's blocking pattern that set up in late October which will be cycling through next week and to close out April.  All models are showing teleconnections supporting high latitude blocking which will produce some unseasonable chill from the Plains into the Lakes region.  I'm sure nobody is to enthusiastic to see this coming, but this to me looks like it will be the last time this season Mother Nature may produce flakes of snow.  I think I'm postponing my trip back to Chicago 1 more week and will try around the 28th.

Did you go to the sand bar or by the London Bridge canal???  The water in the canal was pristine clear blue water that was pretty chilly.  I'd say in the low 60's.  The runoff from the Colorado Rockies doesn't really warm up till late May believe it or not given how warm temps are there now.  It hit 100F in Lake Havasu yesterday.

Would love some 70's but not looking too promising

Lol, I never buy into their outlooks, they're hit or miss. At times they'll call for warmth when there's no strong signal for ridging and vice versa. Back a few weeks ago they were showing those blues for our region for the end of March and beginning of April. Yeah... how did that turn out?

How did your call about warm temps turn out for this upcoming week?

This week doesn't look so warm. Just 50s and one day near 60° in my forecast this week. Kind of chilly out there tonight. Generous sunshine today pushed the temp to 62°.
