This is turning out into a beautiful "Christmas Eve Snowstorm" for SEMI. It will be brutally cold Monday night and Tuesday night w clear skies, fresh snowcover and diminishing winds should really drop those readings below zero. I expect readings to bottom out somewhere between -3 to -8F. My highs will be around 6F or 8F on Tuesday. BRRRRR. Atm, it looks like a more important storm might be in the works for late in the week for some peeps on here to receive some appreciable snows. westMJim
Still getting moderate to heavy snow falling here. So far not all that much wind and at this time flake size is still good. But the temperature is still at 20° It is when the surface temperature gets down in the low teens and below that flake size can become very small. At this time the new snow is at 6.2” and it is still snowing. Some people may not realize that lake snow is for the most part a light fluffy snow and even a foot or more is east to shovel and or snow blow. And most cars can drive thru 6 to 8 inches with out much problems and most 4 X4 and AWD can do over a foot or more with out issues. As for stopping and seeing with low visibilities well that is another matter. As time warrents I will drop a post as to snow amounts. At this time the snow has stopped.Merry Christmas. Climatology for today December 25th At Grand Rapids, MI The average H/L is 32/21°The record high is 65° in 1982 when there were thunderstorms. The coldest high is 10° in 1983The record low is -3° in 1983 the warmest minimum is 43° in 1982 All these record are safe. The most snow fall is 7.0” in 1990 (The snow fall at GRR before midnight was 1.5”) this record should be safe depending on snow fall at the airport. The most snow on the ground is 22” in 1951Last year the H/L was 35/33 there was 0.12” of rain and 5” of snow on the ground. jaster220
Have had a couple short-duration whiteout/bliz conditions so far where vis drops to Ofc, I've seen this LES film annually for 15 yrs here in Marshall. The winds start off with an unfavorable WSW flow taking all the good streamers north of me, then slowly back around to west, finally finishing NW flow. Best results is when that occurs after dark as shown on this map.
