February 2019 Observations and Discussion

I just realized Easter is on April 21st.

That usually means a late arriving Spring.

Longer winter.

Been hearing a strange scratching sound in this sub? That'd be me working my way to a respectable season's snow total. Got another 0.3" this evening via some unexpected LES

Pretty amazed at the wide differences regionally of how good/bad this winter's been. Here's a post from a guy in the Toronto area who thinks this could end up better than 13-14. I didn't realize that SMI had it so much better 5 yrs ago than most in every direction. Meanwhile, this winter most in SMI are trying to decide if this will end up being worse than 11-12 at least in "satisfaction ratings"

Best winter of this decade in my books, even with the dead patch from the end of November through mid January.  You can make an argument for 2013-14, which was no doubt a good winter, but also very frustrating when you're on the sidelines of a *historic* winter taking place just to your SW.  And actually, if we can scrape together 3", we'll have more snow this winter than we did in 2013-14 anyways.  If you like cold and consistent snow-cover though, 13-14 wins.

No snow today so MSP is going to finish the month of February with 39”, which is 31.6” above normal (Feb is our driest winter month usually). Season to date is 57” which is 15.5” above normal. 4th snowiest month on record, and snowiest February ever. From the snowfall to the PV, I will remember this month as one of the best winter months I’ve experienced.

Sun and haze right now here in Southeast Lincoln. Today will be our warmest day with sun so I'm looking for today to melt whatever is left on the roads. Snow is so deep I'm not worried about any melting on grass ahead of the arctic cold early next week. 17.6*F.

It's only 21, but feels super warm with the sun. If it was 50 I'd probably melt. There's also been a noticeable amount of snowmelt, but doesn't matter too much since there was already a lot on the ground.

Monday will see a low of 20* High of 36*

Tuesday low of 22*. High of 38*

We'd. Low of 24*. High of 48*

We hit 21 degrees today. The first over 20 in a long time. The bottom falls out later tomorrow. Potential record low maximum’s this weekend into Monday and record lows possible by Monday morning. Add to that potential wind chill headlines coming later in the weekend into Monday for chills at -25 or lower. NWS Hastings is at a loss for words about this February now into March.

Omaha Eppley rechecked their data for February and had miscalculated at some point, so what looked like being short a couple of tenths ended up being a record February and December through February snowfall

Awh! I’m soooooo happy for you guys ha ha........

I too went back and reviewed regional NWS data sites around here. It's official and not just my hunch. Fully 67% of this DJF was without snow covered ground. I actually have scored well above avg totals for both Jan and Feb but the pattern was always quick to torch off any decent snow that hit here. It's amazing how weak a winter can feel when snow cover is so scarce! Even Dec 2011 had double the snowfall (that's not saying much ofc, but still). January was the snowiest month like this winter, and Feb was decent like this year. The snows came and went more frequently that winter with shorter brown periods. Just to be clear, I don't want to repeat either!

February and meteorological winter wrap. For February at Grand Rapids the mean temperature was 25.6° (-1.2°) the highest for the month was 48° on the 4th and the lowest was -2° on the 1st There was 20.4” of snow fall (14.8” is average) with the most in one day of 5.1” on the 12th There was at least a trace or more of snow on the ground all 28 days and there has been snow on the ground here in Grand Rapids since January 18th February 2019 was a somewhat wet month as 3.43” of precipitation fell (1.79”) is average. For meteorological winter (December 1st to February 28th) Grand Rapids mean temperature was 26.6° Average is 26.5° Snow fall in meteorological winter was 54.1”  (57.5” is average) With a mild and almost snow free 1st half and a cold and snowy 2nd this is a very good case of a “back loaded” winter.

In Grand Rapids there was at least 1" reported at GRR on 45 days so here it was at least 50% of met winter had snow on the ground. Here at my house that would be 48 days of 90 as there were 3 days at GRR where they reported only a trace and I had at least 3" on the ground. Here at my house there has been snow on the ground since January 18

The month of February 2019 was one for the books at KLNK. Not many records were set, but boy we came close to many.

The month came in very March-like, with temperatures well above normal that worked to kill off the snowpack developed in January. That flipped quickly, with a 4-day long cold snap bringing temps in the double digits below normal once again. Following that was a 6-day period that was near normal. In that 10-day stretch, two 1-2" snowfalls occurred, both of which quickly melted off. On Valentine's Day, the bottom quickly dropped off, with the passage of an Arctic cold front. That front solidified the cold pattern here, and we would have no more above normal days for the rest of the month. That also kicked off a stormy pattern, as we would see measurable snowfall five of the next six days. On the 23rd, a powerful blizzard came through, dropping 8" in about six hours at the airport.

The mean monthly temperature was 18.6*F, which is 10.4*F below the normal mean of 29.0*F. This is good for the 7th coldest February on record at KLNK. The highest maximum temperature was 58*F on the 3rd, and the highest minimum temperature was 34*F on the 2nd. The lowest minimum temperature was -7*F on the 25th, and the lowest maximum temp was 12*F, also on the 25th. No temperature records were set.

1.59" of precip fell, which is 0.82" above the normal of 0.77". No daily precip records were set. 23.2" of snow fell, which makes this the 2nd snowiest February on record at KLNK. Daily snowfall records were set on the 19th, when 4.4" fell (3.2" in 1989), and on the 23rd when 8.0" fell (6.7" in 1994).

In February I received 4.00" precip, which is very wet.  My snow total is 22.1", just edging out January's 21.9".  We went ten years without a 20" month, now we have two back to back.

I finished the month off with 13.5" of snow. My biggest storm was on Feb. 10th when I received 4.5" of snow. The blizzard on Feb. 20th dropped 4" of snow and was by far the most interesting thing that happened in my area for the month. Here is a breakdown of Feb. Not even close to the record of 1936........that's hard to imagine that year my gosh! That cold in Feb. and then that hot in July?! Also of note; this was the coldest month overall that we have had in our area in over 15 years!
