February Snowfalls 2/10-2/12, Part III & IV

Geos

Recommended Posts

That AR was definitely more widespread, unlike today's narrow band.

The other thing about Cascades west draining watersheds at that time of year, is that all of the flood control reservoirs were basically at minimum pool and we're able to delay some of the runoff.

Obviously the snow that was downstream from the dams melted quickly, it was the unregulated, east flowing drainages from the coast range that really overloaded the Willamette.

The January 2012 event in the Central Valley was about as severe of localized small stream flooding as you will see around here. But didn't get too bad on mainstem rivers and it was a fairly narrow AR if I remember correctly. It also was not super warm.

I had 21" of snow on 1/17/12 with 2.96" of precip and then 5.38" of rain on 1/18/12, and about 2" on the 19th.

Was really surprised to see all that snow in Maui Phil posted about.

Yeah... the storm over the weekend was the coldest in 40 years. And even so... it was still pretty nice in the resort areas on leeward side of the islands.

Models sort of looking disappointing for any hopes of lowland snow on thursday night.

Well, at least you have snowcover on the ground.

Why do these topics always get 100 times as many replies as the California ones?

Not as many California posters on this forum.

Yep, that was as much precip driven as anything. It was the smaller streams that didn't have headwaters too far into the foothills to tap into melting.

I live right on Glen Creek about a mile downstream of the upper gauge.

That was the closest I have seen the creek to overflowing it's banks since we lived here. Neighbors who lived here in 96 said it was the worst they had seen. Thankfully it didn't because the flood plain maps would have been re drawn and force us to carry flood insurance, which we don't have to now

I would say that for most your weather isn’t as varied or interesting as up here.

That’s somewhat true, but California has a ton of interesting weather. Monster ARs, dangerous fire weather, drought anomalies, interesting downslope windstorms, crazy heavy snow in the mountains, and your occasional monster pacific storm.

Sounds like you lost your outflow.

Yeah, getting my shoes on to go out see if I can find it LOL!

Did had a brief shot of southerly winds, which coincided with  the jump, but as quickly as we jumped to 33 we are back down to 27.  We are definitely on the fringe.

Question- which was more impressive from a meteorological standpoint? The 12/18/90 Seattle snowstorm, or the 1/10/17 Portland snowstorm?

EDIT: Replaced 2/11/19 with a more robust storm, cause apparently the recent one wasn’t all that special /:

Heard Ferndale is seeing some flakes, but reports of rain in Bellingham. Could be nasty with temps dropping overnight

1-10-17.

Yeah pretty silly that question was even asked. The 2/11/19 storm was a pretty classic PNW overrunning snow event. The 1/10/17 event not only produced much larger snow totals in places not accustom to seeing them, and was a much more unique setup.

You’re fine! Replaced that one with a better indicative of Puget Sound’s extreme weather potential. My real goal is to find a crazy weather event from both Seattle and Portland and compare them.

850mb temps spike all the way up to +5C tomorrow night. Very likely my streak of 10 straight sub-40 highs ends tomorrow...We'll see if PDX can keep enough easterly component to stay below 50. Thursday we get precip moving in pre-dawn and cooling upper level temps so if we can avoid some kind of warming south wind surfacing tomorrow night we should be okay.

Looking into it a little more, it looks like most of the valley should keep a light northerly or easterly gradient in response to the low off the California coast...

Stalled isn't a bad thing, it's just beginning to develop and slowly sliding SE. Could bring some quick accumulations to the south island and northern Puget Sound.

Hey...everyone on the BC forum is just waiting for you Van Islanders to let us know if and when the snow starts. Drop by and say hi.
