February 2019 Weather Observations and Discussion Part 2

Things even out over time. Portland probably did the best of any metro area in the lowlands during the 2013-18 period.

Now with the Puget Sound and the south Willamette valley scoring big this month, the last decade looks pretty darn balanced for the region overall.

Yeah, but the week (and 24-hour) totals in both areas this year surpassed anything PDX has seen in that 2013-18 period.

Incredible.  Your average I think is around 80", similar to Winthrop Wa only colder.  WIth a 70" difference between the college and your place, I'm assuming your up in the foothills out of Boseman a bit?

Yeah Bozeman's average yearly snowfall is 90" and I'm about 6-7 miles south of town with a bit more elevation and up against the Gallatin Mountain Range. Not sure on averages where I sit but I'd venture ~120" a year.

I still think at some point with the continued pattern we are in weather wise Washington and Oregon will have more low snow events in the next couple weeks, chances are fading that anything major will happen rapidly however

Yeah, it's been an incredible stretch run for PDX these past several years. This year actually hasn't been bad for East PDX Metro with that one good snowstorm on the 9th. Mother Nature will always balance itself out in the end. I feel good about other areas getting clobbered if I'm not getting any. That means the chances of me getting pounded are higher in future events.

I know, but some of these totals have been so crazy. When have we ever gotten airport totals of over 10 inches? Or week long totals of 20 inches? In the last few years? I liked last February.

Zoomed out view of Sunday... mostly sunny again for most of western WA and OR.

But you can see the incredibly cold conditions in Montana while its in the mid to upper 40s out here.

Would definitely break some record cold highs and lows out here for early March at face value.

January 2017? PDX didn’t officially record 10” but who cares. Many places had totals that high or higher, including yours I’m sure. Then it stayed on the ground for a week with clear and cold weather.

You’re right, that was a good month. I’m feeling extra bitter about this month right now and all the fake-outs. I would still argue this month was better for Seattle than that one was for PDX, but that was probably my favorite month of my life.

I know, but some of these totals have been so crazy. When have we ever gotten airport totals of over 10 inches? Or week long totals of 20 inches? In the last few years? I liked last February.

The February 6-8 2014 three consecutive snowstorm days piled up a lot of snow around the area and PDX also set a record low high of 23 for the month.

The January 10 2017 event, there was a large stretch along the middle of the Metro area that got a foot plus. Plus it stayed on the ground for a week with frigid temperatures. Yeah snow is important but also how long does it stay on the ground which is measured with snow depth.

In at end, at least you got a snow day out of all of this. When I was your age I would have been ecstatic about that even if I didnt get much snow. Hopefully you get slammed in the next go around.

Don't think so, temps are 34-35 in most of the area. We should hopefully get a few more hours of snowfall to watch at least. It should also help resist the daytime heating. Roads are pretty much just wet here.

My temp is at 29, weird. Knew there was a big contrast, but I could score decently with this band. Is it intensifying?
