Today marks the 50th 90+ day of the year at DEN. Still no 100+ days, but a lot of 95+ days.

The record is 73 90+ days from 2012. We'd have to have basically unabated torching between now and mid September to beat that.

Well, a roasty August and a few hot days in September did it. DEN is at 74 90+ days this year, a new record. August was the warmest on record.

Thanks to the record cold snap early in the month, September will likely end up just a bit above normal.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today might be the last 100 degree day of the year. Looks like a few days next week will be close but should mostly be 90s. Average is low 90s at this point so its about time.

As of yesterday Phoenix has now set records for most days of 115+,110+,105+, and 100+ in a season. 95+ will be set in a few days too but 90+ is probably safe since we had a slower start to that in April.

Models have been all over the place for this weekend snow event here. GFS/GEM push the Arctic front further south giving Bozeman 6-10" of snowfall. While on the Euro the front stalls just north of here with the cold air and moisture getting hung up north of here. The Euro only shows 1-3" of snowfall.

Based off past events I'm guessing the Euro is wrong on this one as these Arctic fronts seem to always push further south than forecasted. Being east of the divide seems to allow cold air masses to seep in more freely here than modeled.

The NWS seems to be leaning towards the Euro (don't blame them!) so it will be interesting to see what happens!

Yeah I'm perfectly fine with snowfall mid October on. Just hope we don't see below zero weather next weekend like the GFS is showing now. Trees are not ready for that.

Midnight high yesterday of 50 but we never got above freezing during the day after the front passed through around 2am yesterday. Dropped down to 21 degrees this morning and the snow has now switched over to freezing rain. Currently 28 degrees.

Got the first ski in of the year before the changeover though!

Looking more and more likely that a historic pattern is setting up Wednesday through Sunday for here. Both cold and snowfall records are likely to fall on several days though 1919 might be tough one to beat on some days.

As of right now it looks like 3-5" of snowfall tomorrow night into Thursday morning with highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits. Friday into Saturday another push of Arctic air along with a passing low to the south could drop 12-18"+ of additional snowfall thanks to some very high snow ratios. Highs look to be in the low teens over the weekend with lows dropping below zero.

Yeah, I feel pretty lucky and it does feel like we shifted into a 70’s like climate over the past 3.5 years. With that said, last winter was my first dud of a winter since moving here. We had that historic cold in September and October and then that was it.

I know mid winter was a dud, but didn't you have a good Feb/Mar? I see Bozeman had almost 100" for the season, more than average.

EDIT: Looks like Feb 2020 was actually Bozeman's snowiest February on record.

Yeah February did kind of save the winter snow wise after a very dry December and January. I was referencing more temp wise for the winter though. Dec-Feb ended up being 2.2 degrees above average.

Don't get me wrong though, it was still a decent winter, just nothing close to the previous two winters.

Looking pretty likely now that we'll see double digit below zero temps on Monday morning which would threaten many all-time October low records. -10F is the record in Bozeman and -14F (set just last October) at the Bozeman Airport.

As for snow – Models seem to be trending to increase snowfall totals. GEM is likely off the rails but the Euro seems more realistic. For the event tonight through Saturday, I'd go with 10-18" in town and 14-20" on my roof.

The all-time October low for DEN is 3, and that's probably safe, but the all-time min max of 20 from October 2002 could be in jeopardy.

All-time min, max is 5F in Bozeman and 12F at the Airport for October. The 5 degree high in Bozeman from 1935 is out of reach but BZN could possibly be broken. Also set in 2002.

Crazy snow and cold headed for Montana. Was reading there are massive amounts of people moving to Montana sight unseen and home prices are going through the roof. I hope the state doesn’t lose to much of its character.

Yeah I read that article from the Washington Post as well...COVID continues to bring all sorts of change in the world that we live in. Lots of people moved here this summer without really having an idea of our winters here so it will be interesting to see how they handle it. This week is definitely going to be a shock to the new transplants!

Still on track for another 8-12" Friday night into Saturday.

Nice pics. It's crazy that there are still fires burning here in late October, but fortunately that's about to change this week.

This was the view of smoke clouds yesterday evening from the dog park looking towards the mountains.

10" of snow overnight and it is still coming down very heavily. Heard a report of 20" in Helena just overnight as well. Missoula even picked up 12". The extent of this storm has been so massive with all-time October snow records falling and soon to be cold records. Historical statewide October storm indeed.

Currently 11F and dropping.

Under a Winter Storm Warning for 5-10" tomorrow morning through Monday morning.

High temps are now expected to be in the teens both tomorrow and Monday (although we might have a midnight high a bit warmer for tomorrow), so the all-time October min max of 20 for DEN will likely fall.

The all-time min of 3 now looks like it could also be in jeopardy Monday night.
