wx_statman
Just thinking back to the incredible stretch of cold in central N. America from late January to early March this year. Something I didn't think about until recently - because of the timing, there were three consecutive calendar months that saw all-time or close to all-time cold records set across this region. For example: January: -38°F at Mt. Carroll, IL on the 31st. This was a new state record for Illinois, previously -36°F in January 1999. February: -52°F at Coronach, SK on the 8th. This station only existed since 1980, and the previous all-time record was a relatively mild -42°F. Still, to break a 39-year benchmark by 10 degrees is pretty remarkable. This is close to the historical limit for cold in this region, even had there been a very long period of record available. March: -41°F at Brandenberg, MT on the 3rd. This was their 2nd coldest reading all-time despite coming in March. Only colder reading was -44°F in December 1983.

wx_statman
That early March airmass was pretty impressive. Showed me something new. I hadn't been around the last time we saw something like that (March 1989).
snow_wizard
That early March airmass was pretty impressive. It sure was. I had a freezing east wind here in the late afternoon with that. That shattered the previous late date for such an event during this century. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! wx_statman
The cold here was no slouch either! It was pretty amazing. Just did a separate post for that in a different thread.
SilverFallsAndrew
Here is an absolutely astounding stat with a caveat. The average maximum at Silver Falls in February 2019 was 35.6, this beat out January 1949 which had an average high of 35.7 for the lowest monthly maximum for the 1938-present period of record. It beat out the average max from February 1989 by 3.4F. The caveat is that Silver Falls does not have data from January 1950. February 2019 had an mean temp of 32.07 narrowly edging out the 32.12 from 1989. 2 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! SilverFallsAndrew
Does it have data from January 1969? For Shawnigan the average monthly maximums31.6F in January 196938.1F in February 2019 It does. The average high the first week of January 1969 was 49.4 at Silver Falls. Things recovered nicely and the month ended with an average high of 38.1. We did have 95.4" of snow recorded that month however, and a 51" depth on 1/31/69. 1/6/69 put up an extremely balmy 54/49 mark. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill!
