September 2020 Observations and Discussion

First off a moment of silence for  9/11..............................................Here at my house I recorded 0.03" of rain since 7 AM yesterday. One of the difference of opinion I have with CoCoraHS is the timing of the reports. While the NWS has their daily reports take at midnight CoCoraHS has the daily reports starting at 7 AM and thus reports do not match up. I know may who report on  CoCoraHS  are farmers and they do not stay up to midnight but just a point I would like to make. At this time there is a strange fire ball rising to the east and the current temperature here is 52.

Next week looks like a very cool airmass arrives. Lows could tumble in the range between 40-45F and looking likely that some 30s will be found in the NW burbs. Looks also dry and sunnier as well.

I'm looking forward to the sunnier days next week and warmer temps.  Like Sparky said, my tomato's need the sunshine to produce more crop!  I came home to an almost fried tomato pot that I left on my deck.  The well-timed rains right before I came back prob salvaged them.  I asked my neighbor to water them occasionally but I guess they didn't do a good job.  So much to ask for such an easy task!

I ended up with right at 1” of rain ☔️ yesterday. Currently we’re getting more on/off rain.

The tomato 🍅 plants 🌱 aren’t to happy with these cool n wet conditions. They prefer warm and dry like we were having, except maybe it was a bit dry for them.

The tomato plants I have in the ground have done fairly well.  I cut into one the day I came back and boy oh boy, did I enjoy every bite!  It's no comparison for store bought tomato's, heck, even the organic ones at the store.  Love gardening!

I planted to many tomatoes (8 plants) and we had way more than we could eat fresh so processed/canned quite a lot into juice for use in soups etc or to drink as is, with sugar added. Also did that with the grapes 🍇 which is soooo good to drink! One thing that was weird this year was there were a lot of big 2” long green tomato horn worms 🐛 eating our plants and even tomatoes. They don’t go into the tomatoes themselves at least. I killed a lot and sprayed, but I probably didn’t use the right kind of spray. Normally we have no problems with these worms.

Thankfully, I did not have to deal with any pests eating my plants.  Glad to hear you had a banner crop!  Send some over this way...!!  The weather looks great next week but I think towards months end it may get cold.  We’ll see!

The showers this morning are more impressive than it appear with rainfall rates up to 1”+ per hour. Several small cells already dumped nearly 2/3” here and it’s heavier to the west and north now.

My digital rain gauge was off again this morning so I went out and cleaned the tipping bucket mechanism to see if that's the problem. I actually had nearly 0.90" instead of 2/3". Checked just now and the soil cracks are nearly closed. Can still see 'em though.

I already had 0.60" this morning before the latest cell moved in.  This cell is orange to deep orange on radar and the rain is very heavy.

Found out last night that an old friend from college passed away yesterday from COVID. Only 40 years old and no other health issues. Unfortunately, he made the decision to go to the Sturgis bike rally and that is where he probably caught it from. That makes 6 people I know personally who have had COVID including my sister, her daughter, and my best man at my wedding.

Looks like a CF will bring some strong storms in my area tomorrow. 😃

DM (Drought Monitor) clearly took my vicinity off from the "Abnormally Dry" color. Now, I am at normal levels of water.

The GOM stands a chance for a strong TS this weekend as a depression has already formed. Could this turn out to be a hurricane. Who knows. We will see.

My area hasn’t changed, because much of this weeks rainfall wasn’t incorporated into the map. It will be next week.

So, how cool is this. Right now, under starlit skies, the temp is at 59F and a dew of 43F. I mean, it cannot get better than this.

Btw: I am using "Charcoal" tanite for my "BBQ". Idk if it is me or not, but, it gives it a different taste (Better) than grilling it on a "Gas Grill." Chicken thighs, salad, brown rice w red wine.🍷 Definitely, a bottle of cold water on the side y'all.

It does if you use a chimney to light it instead of lighter fluid.

Here’s a nice satellite photo of smoke from western wildfires moving about 1,000 miles out over the Pacific. Some of it is also being ingested into our low pressure system.

The last few days I spent in Arizona were about as bad as it has been all season long.  I think it was the day before I left on Tuesday after Labor Day, the sunrise was so dark I thought we had overcast skies but it was the thick smoke!  It was incredible to see how dim the sunshine was while being 100's of miles away from the epicenter of the fires.  Nature has her way of doing things.

As we near the time of year we start thinking about harvesting crop, our neighbors to the north may have to deal with an early freeze in parts of Southern Canada, including Saskatchewan.  The 00z Euro continues to advertise a sharp CF to sweep down and traverse the northern half of our Sub later next week.

I just got back from my walk. It is a cloudy but present morning rather typical for this time of the year. The current temperature here at my house is 64. We are now just past 1/3 way of September and here at Grand Rapids the mean is 63.8 and that is a departure of -2.8. So far the average high this month is 72.6 that is a departure of -4.1 and the average low so far is 54.9 and that is a departure of -1.8.  There is a area of rain heading in this general direction it looks like the heaviest should be just to the NW of GR.

Whoops that should have been pleasant above and not present oh well that is what erasers are for.

Charcoal is the best. My gas grill was basically shot so early this summer I got rid of it and got a Weber charcoal grill. I love it. And like @FAR_Weather said, go with a chimney starter. Avoid lighter fluid if ya can.

The real heavy rain did not really come together for my yard last night, but I still received another several tenths of an inch.  My weekly total is up to 6.12".  There may be one more thin line of cells later this evening before the system finally clears out.

This historic early cold wave has been interesting to say the least. I am surprised that even with temps in the 50s & lower 60s I never hunted up a jacket. I remember being cold only once. When I stepped out after shift about 11 pm Wednesday night the walk to my car was into a stiff NE wind and WC had to be in upper 40s. It was a very damp and misty night as rainfall was about to hit my region. Currently working just south of the KAZO site so there's a large tree-free area for the winds to really crank.
