Low of 50 this morning with a DENSE smokey fog. Visibility below 1/8 mile.

This cold wildfire smoke inversion has to be one of the more bizarre weather phenomena I've witnessed personally.

1902 seems like a really impressively good comparison. La Center went from 89/49 at the start of the Yacolt Burn on 9/9 to 81/62 in the middle of the event on 9/11 down to 59/49 on 9/13 with extremely thick smoke and no apparent front.

The house still stands. They let us in to check on the animals. Without the dogs there 4 of the chickens and 1 of the ducks have been killed, but the sheep and pig are doing well. We hauled fresh wate

Give me a snowflake reaction if you enjoy waking up to new snow falling on top of old snow (Which is actually on top of other snow).    Snow.

You all suck. Please give me the full assortment of emoticons. Thanks.

Same here... couldn’t find it, though I don’t know if it’s all smoke. Believe there may be a combination of the dense smoke and marine layer. Can’t really tell tbh.

Just checked and the IR loop which shows the marine layer through the smoke and there was some low clouds from Tacoma up through Seattle at dawn.

Pretty interesting. I wonder if the Yacolt Burn had a similar type of setup leading up to it too.

Western WA has finally made it to the big league smoke, with more over the ocean ready to continue to stream in. Lovely.

Very odd, unearthly glow outside and visibility is extremely low. Guess it's an inside movie day today.

Seemed extremely similar, right down to the cold shot in the Rockies and strong cross-Cascade gradients. Denver had a fairly impressive arctic front going from 88/43 on 9/9 to 51/39 on 9/11, and then a low of 31 on 9/12 which was their coldest on record for so early in the season.

This year's cold shot was easily more impressive.

Does the average person even notice an impact on breathing or throat irritation from these levels of air pollution?   I worked outside all day yesterday.  AQI was in the 200-230 range.  I didn’t notice anything other than reduced visibility.

It bugs some people more than others it seems. I was outside for about 20 minutes yesterday and had to put on an N95 mask. AQI is at a similar level down here as well. My uncle was out in it all day yesterday and it didn’t seem to phase him.

I could feel it yesterday, but I'm recovering from some kind of illness.  It's bad for you to breathe it all day.

Anything I’ve read on the N95 masks and wildfire smoke situation has indicated pretty mixed results.  Unless it has a perfect seal on your face it is possibly worse than no mask at all.  I’ve heard so many people saying they have their cloth Covid masks to wear for the smoke the past 2 days.  This is misinformation. They do nothing for fine particulate.

The GFS is looking pretty promising for a couple of cool troughs to move in over the next 10 days.  Big pattern shift in progress.

I was in the 321 territory yesterday. It started effecting me after about 3hrs in it while playing on the river. Scratchy eyes and throat. Not horrible though, my mom is with us and she has asthma but she had zero issues.

I was fortunate to have the kind of N-95 masks they use in automotive body shops.  They are designed to make a good seal.  I have stuff I want to get done outside and it's been an endless barrage of things keeping me from doing it.  I can tell the masks are working for me at least.

The mask I have seems to work pretty good it’s not a regular mask I wear into the store. Looking at it now it says P95 and M3 on it actually not N95. The regular cloth masks definitely don’t do much.

Wow, a lot of touchy comments here today.  We can tolerate pages of back and forth pointless drivel at times but if someone questions if the WEATHER has interfered with the ongoing illegal vandalism and rioting then that crosses the line.

Trouble is we all know where it will lead. At least most of the drivel you are referring to is directly related to the weather and the conversation will more or less stay in that realm.

But I know, posting politics is fine as long as its the right kind of politics.

The HRRR shows that it should get brighter by the end of the day in the Seattle area... the top image is right now and the bottom image is at 6 p.m.

The thickest part of the plume (purple) is moving off to the NE by this evening.
