  1. On a personal note, one of my dogs (My avatar pic is of her.), has been missing for about a week and a half. Her disappearance has baffled me, she's 10 years old, she never runs off, and I was unable to track her at all in the snow. I was worried she had wandered off and fallen in a creek, through the ice on a pond, been killed by the cougar that has been stalking the hill, etc... The worst part was the not knowing. Anyways, my wife suggested today that I search animal shelters, and lost dog postings. Seems obvious, but the area we live in is so remote, it seemed out of the question she would be at a shelter, we posted on the local facebook page, and no one had seen her, so I had thought the worst had happened. But today we located her at a shelter in Vancouver, not quite sure how she got there, but it is definitely her... They said she did not like kennel life, and has been fostered up in Skamania County and has been LOVING the snow. Such unexpectedly great news, we'll be picking her up this evening. My guess is she made it to the highway, and someone passing through picked her up and maybe the lived up in Clark county so they dropped her off at the shelter up there. Very strange.

  3. When I still worked at the large senior community I used both the tractor with the front end loader and and sweeper for all of the roadways and parking lots, we also had a mower with a plow attachment like the one I have at home for the smaller sidewalks that my co worker used. In 2008 I had to use the loader to move the snow banks that I had formed from the sweeper to pile into huge mountains to free up space. Those piles lasted until February of 2009. I worked there full time from early 2006 thru early 2013 (still helped with snow removal and irrigation winterization from 2013 thru 2018) so I had a lot of time to fine tune my snow moving skills to limit disruption to parking, etc since that was a period of many events! Anyway I would get to work at work 4am to start in and would get the large parking lot during the nursing shift change at 6am when the least amount of cars were there. It was a blast! Wish I had more pics of those events.

  5. Seem to be right on the N/S gradient here. I can see breaks to the south, but to the north is solid clouds and dark. 0.23" on the day, 50 degrees. Nice cap cloud on Mount Hood right now.

  6. Thank you! It was definitely a struggle. I was pretty much "forced" to go to college out of high school, its just what you did in my family. I failed out of my first college attempt the first year, then it was a bunch of start/stops after that as I tried to rebuild my GPA. When I applied to WGU, I had to order 6-7 transcripts to capture all my credits. They were going a thing where they waived the application fee which was greatly appreciated because I had to spend about $50 getting all my transcripts sent! In hindsight, I think I probably would have been better off going into the trades. I like working with my hands. Everyone in my family (except one aunt who was in the family by marriage) had a degree and had white collar professions, so I didn't grow up seeing the trades as a viable career path. The one aunt was a printer, and I actually did that for a few years and loved it. I apprenticed at a shop in Atlanta, and she had her own shop in Columbus, I would go down and help her when she had big jobs, which was kinda fun. It was already a dying industry as laser copiers got better and better. The one downside, anything not printed not centered/oriented correctly on the page jumped out like a sore thumb. It became a game for me and my aunt...."what's wrong with this print." And of course that is pretty much a dead trade now. Any way, I would definitely not recommend the path I took to ANYONE, but I will say "better late than never."

  8. Here’s a section of the driveway in twisp we have to plow. It’s gravel and about 2.5 miles long. Some steep drop offs so we have to be a little careful

  9. I've plowed snow for 30 years and there's definitely an art to it, you have to plan ahead for future snow and make sure to place it out of the way. Most of the places I did were condos so cars in the way everywhere. 32 years and have never damaged or hit anything.

  14. Still awaiting the new 4Runner but while I wait putting together my first road trip with it!!! Also looking at all the fun addons that I may need for the trip…hopefully storm chasing mid west! Regarding the market….double digit gains have been unreal these past few years and have definitely spoiled many of us! So of course frustrating to watch large portions wiped away so quickly. During the turbulent times in the market I tend to look away as I know in the long run it will prevail. I will need to look more into stable funds as I age though.

  18. Not really. May have briefly made it above 32, but not for long. Lots of compacting of the snow, went down about 15 inches mainly from compaction. Had an inch of new snow then light freezing rain. Lots and lots of backhoes, dumptrucks, etc trying to widen roads, clear others etc. Snow has to be removed and not just pushed around, because there are no places to push it too Had the National Guard come by the neighborhood to check on everyone. I know my neighbors and which ones are away for the winter, which have died, and one that moved into a long term care facility.

  22. Hmm appear to be 6'1"-6'3"? and left handed? That's the perfect setup for a College scholarship and the Pro's! I was a 6'1" 225lb's right hander (Pitcher, Center field). Even though I could consistently throw upper 80's and touch lower 90's I was a dime a dozen (especially in the Bay Area) and didn't get any offers. I got to pitch against Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins in tournament ball though!

  24. Lol…don’t want to get into covid on this thread too in-depth. I just find it interesting that so many people that I know in my personal life and on this forum came down with covid in the last 3 months or so. More than the whole pandemic combined.

  25. Are you serious! Lol, you just got blitzed with 12”+ of snow and now your complaining? Sheesh, don’t get greedy bud! Would you rather have a warm cutter and wipe your snow pack and then leave you with brown grass for a couple weeks? I would sit back and enjoy real winter scenery. NW Flow also would increase LES chances. I’d gladly switch places with you.

  26. Soooo....anyone have anything interesting happen lately? This can go to the banter thread I guess, but there ain't much going on here right now. Both my parents have Omicron, but they're fine. The usual mild symptoms. Man alive, it's spreading like crazy. Cooper turns 3 months old on Thursday. He's hoping for more snow this year. Anyone else seeing their investments get annihilated lately, particularly the last week or so?

  32. Well said. I never knew about the track staying along the ocean. Typically clippers tend to be along a continental air mass not a maritime one. Models started with a west trend and hopefully now a more juiced one will follow! One thing for sure; I don’t recall a clipper digging that far southeast and then turning into a monster nor’easter. Only one I can recall is the superstorm of 93. That one started in Florida and cut up though.

  33. This isn’t a “standard” clipper coming out of Alberta. It has a lot of Pacific moisture with it. Just follow it’s track in the upper levels. The 500 mb low comes in at Washington state and the energy basically tracks along the border before dropping south and doesn’t dry out

  37. That is amazing news! Being in the shelter field for nearly a decade now I can tell you that no matter how remote you think you live always report a lost dog with all of the area shelters, so many times they end up there, someone picks up a dog thinking it is lost when in reality it’s just at the end of their driveway, etc and takes them to the closest shelter where they are put onto stray hold. Once the hold is up they either put them up for adoption, place them into a foster home if they do not shelter well, or get transferred to an organization that either has more space or is a transfer in only shelter like the one I work at. If you lived in certain other parts of the country once stray hold was up the outcome would not be so good.

  40. Yeah tons of people I know came down with covid in the last couple months…myself included. Which is interesting since not many people I knew came down with it until the omicron came around. Todays day 7 for me but I started feeling much better this morning think I’m finally getting out of the woods.

  42. AFD from KC office: The best chance to see precipitation still resides this weekend. Models depict upper-level flow to take on a squished or pinched orientation, if you will, placing the steering mechanism for any disturbances in a north to south pattern directly over the CWA. This will guide a developing low pressure system ejecting out of Canada Friday morning to dive south through our region. While moisture remains lacking at this time, strong upper flow will provide a surge of moisture from the Pacific, and send it south with the incoming low pressure center. This is best seen on the 500-300MB moisture transport and magnitude vectors. As this system enters into the forecast area Friday evening, rain is likely to begin the event. As it leaves over the course of Saturday, dropping temps behind an associated cold front and a potential developing deformation zone, frozen precip may end the event in our forecast area. While we are not hanging our hat on any potential solution, this event does prove itself interesting as the GFS projects it to strengthen as it dives south and swings back north up the east coast as a strong winter cyclone.
