  5. This is the best thunderstorm Eugene has had in many years. Lightning every 5 seconds or so. I've seen at least 30 bolts.

  6. I'd guess a good portion of the I5 corridor will see lightning tonight into tomorrow morning. There is a main axis of diffluence that coincides with the best midlevel moisture around 7am in the Seattle area, though some pop up showers do tend to form a tad earlier than expected and further away from the source of best lift. The coast has a distinct shot at some organized convective banding which Seattle (and especially Portland) does not really have. The instability is there everywhere, some places breaching 1000j/kg, but the killer will be a relative lack of lift. I do think there will be surprises.

  7. I know the afternoon temps get Hot but 90-95* overnight…..yuck! Got up to use the restroom at 3am (I’m camping in a cabin so need to walk outside to the restrooms) and it was 95*! I will not live here….nope! I did get the 5.5 mile hike in though and it was awesome! Went through this cool slot canyon as well to get to the lake. Hope you all get some boomers out of this!!!

  13. WILDFIRE UPDATE (Lightning Made Oregon Burn Bad Edition!) NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/9/22 Washington - 5 (Five new fires sparked in WA, all on the western side of the Cascade crest. The new Whitcomb Fire west of Paterson is fast expanding. Good news, of the 12 fires started yesterday, all but one have been put out. There are now four large fires in the state; Cow Canyon Fire, Vantage Highway Fire, Williams Lake Fire, and the Riparia Fire. Total fires statewide remains at 23.) Total: 23 Oregon - 29 (Lightning has done great damage and stretching fire crews thin. 29 new fires started mostly due to lighting.... There are three large fires in the state; the Miller Road Fire, Cedar Creek Fire, and Windigo Fire. Not only did lighting cause mass damage throughout the Oregon Cascade's, it also caused at least 17 new fires along the California's northern border with Oregon which will likely grow and make more smoke. The total of fires has exploded from 31 to 54. Oregon now has more fires than any other state/province in the region.) Total: 54 Idaho - 0 (No new fires in the state for the fourth straight day. Two major fires still exist, the Moose Fire and Woodtick Fire in remote locations within the Bitterroot Range. The total number of fires remains at 3. ) Total: 3 British Columbia - 8 (Eight new fires in the province. There are now eight large wildfires in BC. Some good progress in putting out fires in the past 24hrs. The total amount of fires in the province decreases from 55 to 49.) Total: 49 SMOKE UPDATE Onshore windows are pushing smoke eastward again over the mountain range crest. Because of this, air quality is degrading across Eastern Washington and Oregon. Spokane and the Idaho panhandle are most effected with air quality dropping into the moderate range. This smoke is from British Columbia and Northern California. Smoke will also bunch up along the Idaho-Wyoming border and cause moderate quality in valleys in the region. Southwestern Montana may see air quality degrade before it gets better. Air quality will worsen around Medford OR as several new fires have sparked. Air quality is currently moderate to unhealthy. Smoke that had blown westward into the Pacific will now be shifting eastward and drift aloft over Western Washington and Oregon, but should have no impacts. This smoke is from northern California. Smoke is within all the valleys of southeast BC and up into Kelowna. Smoke is drifting eastward and south. Smoke into Calgary, Lethbridge, and into Idaho and Montana. The further from the source, the higher aloft it is. The fires from Northern California and British Columbia are currently the biggest smoke emitters on the North American continent.

  18. Was out late last night taking advantage of clear skies and wonderful weather with my son observing the Heavens with telescope. Saturn was gorgeous as were other objects. But the bright moon ruined a lot of objects. Here was a 89% full moon at 146* power. ,Shifted to the side to show more contrast shot with simple cell phone through the eyepiece.

  21. Flower's are bloomin' this year! How is everyone else's gardens doing? Flowers here are great, my strawberries are doing great, my hot chili peppers are doing great, onions, sweet chard, lettuce, rhubarb are doing good, but my tomatoes aren't doing a whole lot, nor my figs or blueberries.

  22. Lol. It's in there. I was like a kid in a candy store looking for the biggest ones. I can confirm that getting bonked in the head with one doesn't feel great.

  23. Speaking of training cells... That storm NE of Salem is dumping a biblical amount of rain over the same area. Pretty strange setup.

  24. I know I don't speak for TWL, but I absolutely love thunderstorms. To get large hail and lightning galore, well to me it's just as nice as a 6" snowstorm and three days of subfreezing temperatures. I'm pretty happy. I also remeasured the hail and it was about 1.4". Pretty sweet.

  25. I hope you finally saw your bolts. I saw at least 50 of them but I was standing outside like an Oregon idiot.

  26. And the Eugene/Springfield metro area wasn’t even forecast to get any thunderstorms. They literally blew up in like an hour.

  28. I've heard this thrown around before, but I'm not sure if marine pushes can even really be a trigger. They exist at such a shallow portion of the atmosphere and the amount of air they displace vertically is pretty negligible. In reality I think marine pushes just coincide with larger scale upper level disturbances, which actually do cause lift a meaningful scale and at the middle levels of the atmosphere where storms do end up firing off. Upper level disturbances trigger convection, as well as create the pressure gradients at the sfc necessary for marine intrusions; hence the spurious correlation between marine pushes and convection.

  29. Currently southeast of Wichita heading SE…. One hell of an anvil cloud, I think it is over Dallas but not sure, my connection is pretty slow. Edit: not sure what the deal is with the upside down pictures, saw other folks having this problem earlier….

  30. This is a lot more activity than I expected at this time right now, most models were only showing isolated showers at this moment.

  31. That is pretty crazy and yes, plenty of water in the lake still. 87* water really does suck…lol but 3 days ago I was in 60* bone chilling water doing what’s called “Slide Rock” just out of Sedona. That water had me shaking good!! London Bridge and the sunset tonight magical

  38. That will be welcome news as HS football practice has started in Nebraska. My son is now a Junior, wow I feel old, then I think I also have a daughter that will be a Senior in college this Fall. Whoa. Starting tomorrow through Sunday the death ridge moves in again. No rainfall and unfortunately, very light winds can make a football practice in pads pretty tough. They had their first practice yesterday and my son came home and said it wasn't too bad as the dew point was only in the upper 50's. I've taught him well.
