  1. Got back into town yesterday. Only a few near misses with thunderstorms while I was in Georgia, which was disappointing. Our last full day there was quite pleasant, with relatively low humidity and a cool breeze. The flight back was a non-event weather-wise, and I got some great pictures over the Cascades, then again over Puget Sound. Side note, If you are a fan of the Horizon Q400, you better get your flights in quick. They announced a few months ago that they are being retired. I talked to the flight attendant during a mechanical delay, and she said they are accelerating the schedule and will be phased out by January. She also said they will be discontinuing the a 'la cart service, as well as free beer & wine that you normally get on the Q400 flights. Flights to Medford have already switched over, and she said the SEA-PDX run will be the last to switch.

  4. Cloudy and 70s again today. Lot of 70s in the grids now. Definitely enjoying this break from the heat. Hopefully the worst is over for this year.

  6. Another round of strong La Niña forcing coming up. Very well entrenched through the E-Hem so it will effectively preclude any WWB/DOKW development. Strong La Niña winter seems imminent now.

  8. Felt a touch humid while I was tractoring today. Cleaned up the mess behind the shop that was left from the previous owners (I did add to it as well over the last 4yrs) that was mixed in with weeds and blackberries…and yeah my back became quite moist, that usually doesn’t happen.

  10. Wish you could have gotten more, soil moisture is a big problem for your area and most of Nebraska. Several strange things on this map, the lack of moisture around Chicago and of course Kentucky is flooding while North Carolina can't get a drop.

  11. WILDFIRE UPDATE Let's do this again... NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/15/22 Washington - 9 (9 new fires in the state. Many new fires started in the southeastern corner of the State due to lightning strikes. These are expected to be put out quickly by crews from Clarkston. There are four large fires in the state. Several fires have been put out, including all the new fires from yesterday. The total increases from 42 to 46. This is the first time so far that WA has more fires than OR this fire season.) Total: 46 Oregon - 3 (3 new fires in the state. There are three large fires in the state. The total of fires drops from 45 to 40.) Total: 40 Idaho - 1 (1 new fires in the state. The 'Ra 7 Mhrfpa Fire' fire was put out after spreading fast yesterday. Eyes remain on the cluster of lightning induced fires in the St. Joe National Forest. Growth potential is possible as there is plenty of fuel to expand. We got from three to four large fires in the state. The total number fires grows from 25 to 26.) Total: 26 California - 31 (Thirty one new fires in the state of California, most occurring in the mountains around the LA Metro area, the Sierra Nevada's and a cluster south of the Bay Area. Fires are very low for California, especially this time of year. There are currently six large fires in the state, with four in northern California, and two in Central California. There are 60 wildfires burning in the state.) Total: 60 British Columbia - 54 (BC Fire Mapping is broken, so take these numbers with a gray of salt. Know there is truth in them, but also some errors. A large fire north of Prince Rupert has been put out. This brings to total big fires in the province down to five. The total amount of fires in the province is 145.) Total: 145 Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.) 1. British Columbia - 21 days with the most wildfires 2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires. SMOKE UPDATE Besides isolated areas within some BC valleys, around Wenatchee, and near La Pine, smoke is mostly aloft and out of the breathing air for the populace of the Pacific Northwest. Smoke is mostly aloft over Montana. The story is not as good for California with fires producing a lot of smoke. Southward winds are pushing smoke into populated places. All of California's northern counties are seeing reduced visibility due to smoke. Air quality is hazardous to moderate from Weaverville, to Redding, to Chico, and parts of Sacramento's metro. Air quality is declining through Napa Valley and the eastern portions of the Bay Area from Vallejo to San Martin. Higher elevations in the southern part of the state are seeing moderate air quality and lower visibility due to smoke, but lowland areas are seeing mostly clean air, though this can vary to moderate throughout the day.

  13. Things could get interesting around here this evening - it would be awesome if this band develops and sets up over the Omaha metro and points eastward like its being shown on the short-term models. I have picked up around 0.25" of much needed rainfall today - with plenty more to come it sounds like (fingers crossed)!

  15. I love snakes (always have, loved lingering in the snake house in the zoo as a child, thought they were beautiful and fascinating, couldn’t understand why so many other people found them creepy and hurried through). If there’s a lot of rattlesnakes in an area, that typically means there is a lot of rattlesnake food (rodents) in that area. Many areas of Western North America would be overrun with rodents were it not for snakes. This is also why snakes can hang around houses and other inhabited areas: the house is attracting rodents, and the rodents are attracting snakes. Solution is to address the rodent problem, typically by excluding them.

  21. a little early climo wise for me to post this - but here goes anyway. Looking well ahead, 90F+ sure seems not on the horizon and with a summer of over forecasting temps from both CPC and local NWS and most guidance, outside chance that last 90F+ temp has already occurred at KDSM. Mean is 9/6 for last 90F temp-- a full 3 weeks early would be a nice end to an over hyped summer -- at least here in the C. PLains.

  24. What a beautiful forecast, I would be thrilled with 1 to 2 inches of rain from this system... It was nice to wake up to the sweet sound of rain falling on the roof and thunder in the distance... only a few hundredths of rain so far in the rain gauge - however the trends are our friends. Bring it on Mother Nature!

  25. I read it felt almost Fall-like back home with cloudy skies and high temps in the upper 60's/low 70's near the lake. Sign of things to come? @OKwx2k4...'13-'14 vibes surely... To add to the Monsoon Flooding, esp up in the Flagstaff region where the burn scars are present, I drove down this particular HWY 89 later in the day on Friday. It was closed earlier in the day from the torrential rains. I did see all the debris that was cleared off the HWY on the side of the road. There were huge logs, branches, etc all piled up and mud everywhere. https://gcmaz.com/kaff-news/kaff_news/monsoon-flooding-closes-highway-89-sends-water-through-wupatki-trails-saturday/

  27. The unnamed? Gulf coast system is ashore and giving south Texas good rain. The thing is headed Northwest into the heart of Texas which will be good. When it will turn to the Northeast will determine if it interacts with the cold front. Good for drought areas but maybe bad for Ky and the Ohio valley if it hangs together that long.

  42. WILDFIRE UPDATE Let's do this again... NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/14/22 Washington - 8 (8 new fires in the state. There are five large fires in the state. Crews had expected to beat the Cow Canyon and Vantage Highway Fire by Sunday, but it doesn't appear that has happened. There are also many small fires that have sparked up along I-5 between Olympia and Longview. These will be put out quick, but a reminder to not throw cigarettes out your window. The total remains at 42.) Total: 42 Oregon - 3 (3 new fires in the state. Crews are doing an amazing job at cleaning up fires. There are three large fires in the state. The total of fires drops from 49 to 45.) Total: 45 Idaho - 2 (2 new fires in the state. A new large fast moving fire called the 'Ra 7 Mhrfpa Fire' is spreading southeast of Boise along the freeway, but thankfully it is expected to be put out soon. Lightning in the St. Joe National Forest sparked at least half a dozen new fires. Growth potential is possible as there is plenty of fuel to expand. We got from three to four large fires in the state. The total number fires grows from 19 to 25.) Total: 25 British Columbia - 96 (Yesterday say 74 new fires, 108, and now 96. The number of large fires in the province is six. Lightning sparked several fires along the Columbia Mountains within the Southeast District. Several are along BC-23, but many are in remote locations as well. Fires are burning around Galena and Winlaw. There are plenty of fuels, so we will keep an eye on their progression or decline. The total amount of fires in the province is 158.) Total: 158 Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.) 1. British Columbia - 20 days with the most wildfires 2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires. SMOKE UPDATE As promised for awhile, winds shifted southward for Medford and Klamath Falls, allowing both areas to have some much needed, smoke-free, healthy air. The metro areas in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and BC all are seeing clean air. Poor air quality still exists due to smoke in various BC valleys near wildfires. Overall, smoke has blown eastward now high aloft over Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and the prairie provinces.
