December 2023 Weather in the PNW
yellowstone replied to TigerWoodsLibido's topic in West of the Rockies
2.76” here so far today on top of 1.69” yesterday. Quite the AR! -
Just got woken up by a loud long rumble in N Seattle. Next flash just a few minutes later. Glad I left the window open. It’s starting.

I’m actually on the east coast this week and when I was leaving I was so bummed knowing I was gonna miss the only major event this year for central sound. Guess I didn’t need to worry. Weather station at my place reads 36.5 (up from 32.9 3 hours ago). My cam showed maybe a little over an inch of wet snow a couple hours ago but it’s melting quick now. Temp hasn’t been below freezing at my place since Saturday morning. Interested to see if that band sets up this afternoon as the Euro showed but overall this winter has been a theme of coming very very close but a lot of disappointment and potential wasted. Lots of days with snow in the air but never more than 2 inches on the ground in my neighborhood. December 20th was by far the best event, but not enough to save the winter. Hard to grade but maybe B-.

PNW January 2023 Observations and Discussion
yellowstone replied to Requiem's topic in West of the Rockies
Well, at least @SilverFallsAndrew was right about that North/South snow gradient after all… -
Got up to 32.5!!!…and then dipped back to 31.8 with more showers coming through….
-
Watched a single flight leave SeaTac for SLC about 20 minutes ago on FlightRadar and nothing since. Hope most people trying to get out for holidays were able get out early.
-
Still getting some decent showers moving through here. Amazing to see the ice add up and icicles growing in real time. Watched a neighbor chiseling into his car to get to his scraper, scraped for about 2 minutes and give up and go inside, all while it was continuing to rain.
-
Three cheers for @TigerWoodsLibido!!!
-
Very light flurries just starting.
-
Let’s all focus on what’s really important….is it still below 32 in Eugene/Springfield? Do we have a NYE style countdown planned for midnight?
-
Nothing yet.
-
Euro sleet map? I’m team sleet for this storm. Less damaging than freezing rain and it makes that cool sound.
-
Decent snow shower now. Looks like we’re about to get some convergence. Very weak line coming up from Renton going to run into the one coming south from Arlington.
-
I’ve been in a temp range of 0.7 degrees since 12:25 and a 0.2 degree range since 3:50. If the weather channel hourly forecast is to be believed, I’ll stay within a range of a degree or so until 6am tomorrow at which point the temp will start a slow decline for the next 24 hours.
-
When does the event start/end for Puget Sound? Does it end because the moisture dies or it rises above freezing?
-
Am I the only one that has absolutely no idea what has been the model output over the last 48 hours for the Thursday/Friday event because I’ve been so fixated on today’s?
-
Yes absolutely. Didn’t stick on deep puddles and in the road gutters at first but everywhere else, including the road, started almost instantly due to how hard it was coming down (and that the switch happened at exactly 32.0)
-
Just measured 1.5” at my place over the course of about 1.5 hours. Think that’s it for now as it’s back down to flurries and nothing too impressive impending on radar. Temp has settled around 30.4. Would be happy with anything additional this afternoon/evening but what I said I wanted was a band of heavy snow and I definitely got that so I’m good.

Flake size increasing with huge aggregates now. Beautiful! IMG_0768.MOV

Accumulating fast and sticking to roads now. Heavy band moving in! Such a great surprise after waking up at 5am to 36 degree rain.
-
Boom! 32.0 all snow. Coming down hard!
