  1. Or a smoke react. It is such a part of our climate now.
  2. Raw overcast showery day here... Jesse must be envious.
  3. Haven't you got the memo? Cold spells are the only form of desirable weather and it is only permissible to model ride for cold and snow. Deviation from this rule constitutes trolling.
  4. That is admittedly one thing about the Southwest that I miss.
  5. Me too. I got tired of all the sunny dry weather in the Southwest and made it a goal to get to the Northwest when I was old enough to leave home.
  6. When heat records get that old and anomalous, I start wondering about instrument placement and sheltering.
  7. Spring is coming and it's going to get warmer. Then comes summer and it will be warmer yet. Sucks to be you.
  8. Very good model consensus for a good torch at the onset, though. Quite the strong signal this far out. Of course the signal gets fuzzy eventually. Almost always does. And don't worry, based on climo there is sure to be another cold trough lurking just around the corner. What we are seeing is merely the opening act of the traditional spring tease.
  9. By the way, how much snow did @AlTahoe end up getting?
  10. Hyder would also be fun. Access via Canada. No road access to the rest of Alaska. Phones in town have Canadian numbers because all utilities come via Canada as well. No customs check to enter Hyder because what can you do but return the way you came. But there is a Canadian customs station going the other way because residents of nearby Stewart BC were using Hyder PO boxes to dodge import duties.
  11. The Alaska town I'd like to visit sometime is Whittier. Access is via a shared road/rail tunnel. Most of the town lives in a single multistory building.
  12. Maybe @TigerWoodsLibido can eke out an early 60 burger and get a head start on the torching.
  13. Yes, I figured the American Christian fascists would be pleased that the Democrats chose to echo their hate speech, but this is nothing new. Ever since I became politically aware as a child, the Democrats have let the Republicans define the rhetoric and issues for them. It is part of why they suck so much as a party. The Democrats don't just bring knives to gun fights, they bring butter knives. Biden should have just been pivoted and attacked, drawing parallels to how the R's in Congress have no immigration policy save to follow their führer's orders, and how this leadership cult shows their fascist nature. Republicans have been calling Democrats socialist and communist for decades. Time to return the favor. Silly me, that would require bringing actual guns to gun fights. Not gonna happen. Sigh.
  14. If it's a death ridge, can we name it Melissa?
  15. It takes the train a day and a half to reach Manitoba from Toronto... and Toronto is nowhere near the Quebec border. And most of that day and a half the train is crossing wilderness forest.
  16. Are you allergic? I don't do anything in particular to avoid getting stung, and it's been over 20 years since my last sting (honeybee, so not bad at all, wasp stings are much more painful).
  17. I live in (what was) murder hornet central. (It seems they have been wiped out; as far as I know, no new ones were seen last summer.) The actual risk was so overblown it was comical. Yes, they WOULD HAVE been a serious problem for the environment if they were not exterminated... Which is why there was an effort to exterminate them. I made no changes to my life as a result. Still did lots of hiking. Still took lots of bike rides. Never saw a single giant hornet. Of course I didn't: there never were that many here. Even in Japan where they are native (and common);people do all sorts of outdoor things without being stung to death by marauding hornets.
  18. https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/ocean-temperature-hit-record-high-february-2024-eu-scientists-say-2024-03-07/
  19. I recorded a low of 7F in April once as a teenager in the mountains of New Mexico. And an 18 in May and a 29 in June (not all in the same year). That April low really did a number on the fruit trees but the flowering bulbs bounced back surprisingly well.
  20. It’s not unusual for climates that have 110+ summer records to have records in the 80’s in March.
  21. Biden is failing at the most important task of his presidency
  22. Devastating, indeed! Have any damage estimates been released for the harm caused by a high of 50˚F instead one of 48 or 49? Any idea how long it might take to rebuild?
