    As lovely as the 00z GFS was for Portland, there is a certain uneasiness to being in the bullseye 60 hours out. Especially with how the models have been in flux.

    I swear for every model that comes out the last three days there’s always some posts in rapid succession with at least one person saying it trended north, one saying it trended south, and one saying no change

    But yeah, looking only at January, PDX’s modern benchmark is 24 on 1/5 AND 1/6, 2004. Their most recent colder high in January was 21 on New Year’s Day, 1979.

    The last sub-23 high for any month at PDX was on 12/29/90. Just nine days earlier was their last sub-20, with a high of 19 on 12/20/90.

    I thought they pulled off a 23 in February 2014.

    Up to 46 at PDX. Seems like they overachieve on highs about 95% of the time anymore. All guidance had them in the low 40s today.

    Seems like Lake McDonald should really be frozen this time of year. Maybe the upcoming -40s for that area will do the trick.

    It would be a cool setup that would open the door for more cold air down the road. It was just an observation. Unfortunately it’s the day 6 icon so who knows.

    I looked at the surface temps and it looked pretty much the same as the 06z. Trending warmer can mean a lot of different things.

    That setup would really mess up our low level cold potential down here. Basically take us back to square one.
